EDUC 350 PART 1: CURRENT EVENT Summary: In the cell below, paraphrase the current event in a paragraph of at least 200 words. The cell will expand as you type. The current event I chose is the fight over transgender bathrooms inside the school system. The current event news article I researched was “District Can’t Restrict Transgender Student’s Bathroom Use, Federal Judge Says”. This article told the story about a district in Wisconsin that was sued by an 11-year old’s mother, due to the fact that she was not allowed the bathroom of her choice. I am extremely passionate about this topic and how it affects the students. The underlying issue is the influence it has on the school system as a whole. Society has pushed for freedom for children to have options and preferences for what they want to be and what they want to do. This is something I despise about the education system. Due to this, situations such as in this news article, arise because students are given an extreme amount of freedom that has gotten out of control. For this reason, these students have grown up, at home and at school, believing that they have complete power over who they can be. Unfortunately, this has carried into the new “norms” of society to choose your gender. With the power of free will and these new ridiculous rules of this generation, students are lost, confused, and powerful. The most horrible part of this all is the safety of the boys and girls. With the freedom for boys to become transgender, schools are now having to deal with the safety of biological girls and biological boys in the same bathroom, alone. It is unsafe and absolutely disgusting. However, instead of looking at how big of a problem this is, the school boards, in mostly every state, are pushing for students to feel empowered and self-satisfied. PART 2: RESEARCH ARTICLE Summary: In the cell below, paraphrase the research article in a paragraph of at least 200 words. The research article I chose for this topic is “Gender Identity Disparities in Bathroom Safety and Wellbeing among High School Students”. In this article it discusses a study on safety of all students due to this current event. In the study, it was found that transgender students felt unsafe if they could not use the bathroom of their choice. Self-esteem and grades were also a factor of this. However, there were also students, who did not identify as anything but their biological sex, who felt completely unsafe with having someone of the opposite sex in the same bathroom as them. Fortunately, this article also states, “President Trump has issued a directive to rescind protections for transgender students while the right of trans high school students to use the bathroom associated with their gender is currently the subject of legal deliberation at the level of the Supreme” (Wernick, 2017). Although this article seemed very biased towards the response and safety, only of the transgender students, it also mentioned statements such as the previous one. This gave me hope that hopefully people understand how many students this truly impacts. It is important to look at all sides, but when it effects students who are trying to stand out and be different, that is when there is a big problem. PART 3: SYNTHESIS & IMPLICATIONS Synthesis: In the cell below, write at least a 100-word paragraph bringing together concepts from the current event, research article, and course concepts (e.g., textbook, video presentations, or biblical principles). Your synthesis may include a comparison of the
information you have reviewed. From the current event, we are shown how much students are given an extreme amount of freedom and how little power schools and districts, worldwide, have. We are also shown that school systems are pushing for students to feel safe, even including which bathroom they feel the most comfortable in. From the research article, we are given the factors that have a negative impact on students, including grades, safety, and self-esteem. Although these sources give us helpful information on this current event, it is important to look at the main source for all of our questions, the Bible. In Genesis 1:27, it states, So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them” (NIV). From this verse, we see how God only made two genders, and unfortunately, people ignored and twisted the Bible into something it is not. I think it was very intentional that this topic is placed all the way in the first chapter of the Bible! God is so intentional! Implications: Write at least a 50-word statement of implications for educational practice based on the synthesis of this information. The way I believe we, as Christian educators, should practice what we have learned from this is to show love to our students who are struggling with this confusion, but to also explain the truth to them. Furthermore, I think another great thing to do it is to use our voices. We may not have the power that many people have, but we always have the power of speech. Especially as Christians, we should be standing up and pushing for what is right!
