Parent/Child #2 Completed Concrete Poetry Assignment
Concrete Poetry Project Evaluation
For this assignment, I chose to ask two families to participate in creating a concrete poem
based on hands and did so to ensure that if one family could not complete it, I would have the other as a backup. To my surprise, both families completed the assignment, and in completely different ways. The first set of hand poems completed by parent/child #1 followed the directions perfectly and displayed that both had a clear understanding of the expectations of the assignment as stated on the instruction/teacher sample sheet. The second set of hand poems completed by parent/child #2 somewhat followed the directions and met the expectations but with a personalized twist. While I love the individualization that parent/child #2 included in their hand poems by combining both sides of the assignment into one to create a very touching narrative, it did not completely follow what was asked from the directions.
Although both poems were completed in very different ways, I believe that I conveyed the importance of concrete poetry, the steps on how to complete a concrete poem, and the instructions for the concrete poetry assignment in a clear way. If I were to use this assignment in the future, I would change the size of the paper provided to the parent/child to use for their concrete poems, especially if it involves hands. After speaking with each family, I found that they both struggled to trace their hands and write out the poem in the small section of the paper that was asked of them. I too had this issue while creating the sample. This is the biggest reason why parent/child #2 decided to create their own and collaborate. In the future, I would provide full-size pieces of paper, maybe even colorful construction paper, for both the parent and child to
use. This would provide a more efficient amount of space for families to trace their hands and write around each finger to create a real shape of a hand with a longer poem. Ultimately, I enjoyed this assignment very much and know that both families that participated did as well.
