Prevention of Methamphetamine-Use in Adolescents Although it is being seen all over the world, methamphetamine use among young adults is increasing in the United States. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (2022) mentions “15% of high school students reported having ever used select illicit or injection drugs,” which includes methamphetamines. The U.S. Department of Education should focus more on the prevention of adolescent methamphetamine use, by implementing more programs and activities in homes, schools and communities.
There are an abundance of home and family-based programs in the U.S. that many are unaware of. Stevens & Smith (2018) emphasize “family support programs that encourage involvement of parents in their children’s lives are a major key to making adolescents less vulnerable to alcohol and drugs”. By implementing these programs in more homes throughout the U.S., family bonding, education on drug use and parenting skills will be enhanced. Further, schools are not taking advantage of the power they have in keeping adolescents from using methamphetamine, or other substances. Moreover, school-based prevention includes life skills classes, positive reinforcement techniques, and training teachers to recognize early signs of methamphetamine use among students (Gonzales, et al., 2007). Though we see these techniques in some schools, ensuring they are used in every school may be a solution to decrease the number of adolescents using methamphetamine. The programs are evidence and research-based through organizations like the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. While using prevention efforts in homes and schools, it is also a great idea to increase the number of community-based programs. By including more “mass media campaigns, public policy initiatives, and other kinds of community organization and activities,” Stevens and Smith (2018)

believe communities can play an important role in the prevention of methamphetamine use in adolescents. Our youth should have more access to the resources they need and there should be more emphasis on where to find them. Though we cannot force adolescents to stay away from drugs, these programs can be effective, if used correctly and more consistently. It can be concluded that there needs to be more focus put on the prevention of methamphetamine use in the inside of homes, schools, and communities. There is an increasing number of adolescents using methamphetamine, as well as other substances. Therefore, it is important to implement more prevention efforts and provide more resources to our adolescents. Although there are prevention-based programs in the United States, there’s not enough emphasis being put on their use.
