Alexis Chester March 19, 2024 Professor Norris ESL- 440N Part 1: Continued Language Support 1. How do you support and celebrate cultural diversity within instruction? Ms. Armour stated that her class is not that diverse, 99% are African Americans with the ELL student making up the 1% who is Hispanic. She is the only student from a different culture. One way that she supports the ELLs students is by providing a lot of one-on-one assistance. Ms. Armour said she also encourages her to participate with her classmates in small groups to form a bond. Another thing that she does is read books, passages of different cultures especially the ones that they have around them daily. 2. How do you leverage home language and cultural assets? Ms. Armour says that they will create a book which includes a holiday or other festivities that we celebrate in our country as well as the other student’s country. This includes pictures of food, song and dance which will be included in the book. The students would then write a paragraph explaining each picture using their own language to share with the teacher and peers. 3. How do you show responsiveness to the different strengths, needs, and identities of all ELLs, including special needs? Ms. Armour says she sets her standards high for all her students. She draws from her student deficiencies and assign activities they can relate to and complete. She provides support and guidance as needed for each student to be successful. 4. How do you demonstrate understanding of the social, emotional, and cultural needs of students when establishing classroom routines and procedures? The teacher said she provides an opportunity for students to have a voice and give their perspective, giving them second chances when certain situations occur. I teach them a variety of emotional words when they are writing in different genres. I encourage my students to think about their choices and consequences before making a decision. Ms. Armour establishes routines and expectations, promoting empathy and respect, and offering social-emotional assistance. 5. Do you believe that the school offers enough cultural diversity activities? Ms. Armour stated that her school does not offer enough cultural diversity because they only have 3% of a different ethnic group and in addition to that they are on a lower socioeconomic level. Therefor the population of a diverse group is extremely small.
6. Do you try to find ways to engage the ELL student’s parent? She said that one way she tries to engage the ELL student’s parents is inviting them to be a part of “Parent Knight Conversation” which is held once a month. I also try to persuade their scholars to be a part of the extracurricular activities to build their social interactions. The teacher stated this can help lead to the parents visiting the school if their child participates in extracurricular activities. Part 2: Reflection The students are still preparing for testing that is coming up. Today for bell ringer the students worked on a passage individually. The students had to read the story and answer questions, but they also had to rewrite an introduction and summary of a lesson about friendship from the passage. The ELL student I work with stated that she needed help, so she came to sit at the desk in the back with me. We reviewed the story together. She had already answered the questions, so I reviewed them with her. I noticed that her second question answer was not the correct answer, so we discussed the question, and I asked her to tell me how she thinks the character felt in the story. She explained and then we reviewed the answers. She scratched out the incorrect answers as we talked
about each answer. We did the same strategy for the following question. When it was time to start on rewriting an introduction from the story, she read I asked her questions to help her get her ideas flowing. I asked her about the setting, and she explained where it took place. I asked her about how she thought the character felt. She created an introduction paragraph by answering each question which helped make her paragraph. When writing I noticed she would forget to put a word so I would mention it and talk about it and why the word is needed to make the sentence complete. When spelling I would help her by sounding out a letter to her to be able to spell a word. Eventually the teacher started directing the instruction. The class numbered the paragraphs and took turns reading aloud. They did a circle map together on the board about the characters Lucinda and Amy in the small circle and then soccer, practice, field, brother , home, and mom inside the larger circle. Next the teacher gave them the prompt “Early one morning” and instructed the students to write a new introduction. When it was time to share the ELL student raised her hand to read her introduction aloud. The teacher commended on three things understanding what she is saying in her paragraph and that her paragraph related to the topic. Over the last three weeks I have learned a lot of valuable information from collaborating with my mentor teacher as well as the ELL student. I realize the importance of being able to give instruction and supporting an ELL student so that they can do well in their academics. From all that I have learned it will affect my future professional practice in a positive way. I know that I must be flexible and able to differentiate instruction as needed. To help demonstrate cultural understanding inside of my classroom I will post images around the room showing diversity. I will provide pictures with vocabulary words as well as the other language of a word of that ELL student. I will change the terms posted with the picture and other language as lessons change that way students have access

in their journal as well as the vocabulary wall that I will implement inside of my classroom. On top of that I will give projects that allow students to share their culture to help them know that they are welcomed and matter. This was a wonderful opportunity and within the 15 hours of observation I have learned some great knowledge.
