2 Apply skills and strategies presented in this lesson to develop a plan for teaching from “Little Things are Big” (reading/interest level 4-6). Your plan must involve a minimum of 4 reading comprehension strategies that are different from the ones used in Writing Assignment #1.   Comprehension Goal: Achieving fluency and comprehension in the text “Little Things are Big” by Jesús Colón. 1. The teacher will have the students use the making connections strategy. Since schools are a mixture of all races. The teacher will have the students who are of color to speak on how they feel about the text, and if they were in the same situation what would they have done differently. As well as those who are not of color to speak on how they feel about the text, and if they would have accepted the help or not. 2. The teacher will have the students use the visualizing strategy. This strategy goes hand in hand with making connections. Since the story takes place in an area where students have more than likely seen before. We can have them visualize it and ask them how they would feel if they were there. 3. The teacher will have the students use the making inferences strategy. This is where the students will use what background knowledge they have about the text. Whether they learned it from home, television, or other sources. The students will then lead into a discussion on what is different in our generation verse what it used to be like in the older generations. 4. The teacher will let the student use the sequencing strategy. This strategy will require the students to make a timeline of how the world went from slavery up until now. This will give the students an insight into why the character was so indecisive on helping the other
3 character. They can see what went on each year between the blacks and white, and when did things really get better?
