I. Based on your current favorite choice for a topic/debate within the course theme announcement
, answer the following:
A. State your stance within the debate you chose, without using “I.”
(1 sentence)
To ensure more stability and compliance with treatment, for adults who are vulnerable to relapse and noncompliance, mental health providers should be required to have safeguards in place for the providers to reach out to patients if they go longer than 4 months without contact.
B. Why is your stance a good one for an argument research essay? (at least 3 sentences)
These safeguards would be extremely beneficial for the community at large, because untreated psychotic patients could be a increased risk for harm to themselves and the general public. This act would make the patient feel like their providers care enough to “check in” and ask how they are doing and in turn keep them in treatment and promote long term compliance. This also would
be a way to determine if the current regimen is working for the patient or if they need a different treatment plan.
C. Who might disagree with your stance and why? (at least 3 sentences)
Public officials or governing bodies might disagree with this idea because it would mean that more funding for mental health services will be needed, and that insurance companies would be billed for these outreach services. The insurance companies may argue that they will have to pay higher coverage for those with documented noncompliance while treating mental health disorders. Physicians may argue that these checks will require more time to locate and reach the patients who are unreachable after receiving treatment and medication.
D. Who do you imagine your audience will be? (at least 2 sentences)
I imagine the audience will be the patients who may need this outreach service. I also feel like that this service will give family and loved ones of those with mental health issues to give them peace of mind that the provider who is treating them cares enough about long-term stability and treatment.
II. In a full paragraph of 7-9 sentences, and without performing any research, please note what you already understand about the debate and what you do not already understand about the debate:
I understand that compliance with mental health treatment is important because an untreated psychiatric condition can cause increased incidence of trouble with law. Untreated psych conditions can lead to self-harm and risk of harm to others in the community. I think that agencies treating psychiatric disorders and providers need to have some accountability to the ©2021 Chamberlain University
community that those with mental health issues are getting the best care possible. I also understand that insurance companies are in charge of making sure that the providers receive the proper compensation for the services rendered. I think this also can land on the shoulders of the government who provide aid and assistance for maintenance mental health treatment in their communities and can be an argument for them when asking for increased funding for services. I would need to research the amount of government funding provided for a community and the mental health board of that state or county. I would have to argue that during diagnostic assessments, the patients are screened to see if noncompliance is a potential issue. If they would benefit from this outreach program to ensure that those who are more than likely to be lost after treatment are reached later. I would have to see if the governing bodies, such as Joint Commission or the Board of Mental Health have requirements already in place that align with my idea, and if they do then see how this is enforce and if not then figure out a way for it to be put into a standards of care policy. III. Shortly, you will begin scholarly research in the library. This research will help you find opposing viewpoints (sources that disagree with you) and supporting viewpoints (sources that agree with you), as well as information to fill in missing gaps in knowledge you may have. With all three of these goals in mind, please list five possible search phrases you might use when you begin searching in the library.
1.
Mental Health outreach programs in place that promote and regulate compliance.
2.
Joint Commission and Ohio Board of Mental Health policies regarding policies
3.
Funding received for mental health services by county in Ohio and how money is allocated.
4.
Outreach programs in Ohio for mental health compliance
5.
CMS payment guidelines for mental health services in United States
