To reach all my EL students in every lesson I will frequently refer to the ELP standards and objectives to make sure that my lessons incorporate those for my EL students in my classroom. I will make sure that I get to know each of my EL students to ensure that they feel comfortable and motivated to come to school every day. I would also research each EL student's cultural background to familiarize myself with the culture and know what customs are considered respectful that might be different in the United States. When speaking in the classroom I would slow down my speech and enunciate every word so the EL students could clearly hear the words that I am using. I would give the EL students 5 seconds of extra time before responding to give them extra time to think and develop a response. The EL students might be in EL classes so I would want to connect with that teacher to discuss ways that I can better support the student in my class, discuss some of the challenges the student might be facing, and discuss the curriculum I am using and how I could best accommodate the EL students. Before taking this class I never realized how difficult it might be for an EL student to come to the United States to learn English for the first time. I never knew that there are different standards and objectives for EL students. I always figured that students who have come from other countries know enough English to get through school and didn’t know that there were classes for EL students to take to learn English. I learned from this class that there are a lot of legal cases that involve EL students that I was never aware of before. I was surprised to learn that EL students in Arizona take the AZELLA to determine their English language proficiency. I am sure that Illinois where I am from originally has a test like the AZELLA I just never learned about it. This class has taught me to have more patience with EL students who might need more time to process the questions that I am asking instead of me thinking that the student just doesn’t want to participate in school. This class has taught me to have more compassion and understanding for EL students who are learning English. All the material learned in this class I will be able to apply when I am working with EL students. The material learned in this class will help me to better assist any EL students I have in my class and the best ways to help them succeed in their educational journey.
