The Literature Review
A literature review is a scholarly survey of sources to be used while performing research on a
specific topic. By performing a literature review, an author gets an overview of the existing
knowledge on that topic allowing them to identify the gaps that exist in his or her area of
research. In the article, the authors talk about continuing competence as one of the main issues in
the literature review.
Boyle and Thompson focus on Di Leonardi and Beils’ literature review on continued
competence. In this section, they discuss in detail the research conducted by Di Leonardi and his
co-author (Boyle & Thompson, 2020). In their literature review, the co-authors conducted in-
depth research using fifty articles published between 2012 and 2020. After summarizing what
they learned from all the articles they used, their findings were presented in four different
categories,” identifying specific competencies, validating competencies, international
competency assessment, and competencies in disciplines other than nursing” (Boyle &
Thompson, 2020). Each of the categories they provided covered a crucial sector that either
affected competency or helped to improve competency in the nursing industry. The technique
used by the authors of the article to create their literature review was interesting. Performing a
literature review may involve going through a lot of books and articles that may consume a
massive amount of time. However, Boyle and Thompson summarized an existing literature
review that covers the same topic as their research. The method employed by the authors not
only saves them time but also gives them an almost identical result that would have been
obtained if they did the whole review themselves.
There are numerous benefits f conducting a literature review. A thorough literature review
increases the researcher’s and reader’s understanding of the topic by bringing clarity and focus to
the research question. It also helps broaden the research area knowledge base, contextualize the
findings, and improve the research methodology (Paul & Criado, 2020).
