Participate in the Debate The section of the book Speak that I just read demonstrates profound comprehension. Teens who struggle with critical thinking can benefit from this activity, as can students who wish to learn about and acknowledge diverse ways of thinking. Because of this brief passage, I understand how a young reader might feel betrayed by an older person, how they might feel lost because the future they imagine can be taken away, and how a teacher might show them to think differently. This has a lot of significance, especially considering that the United States of America is a nation that was built on immigration. When Mr. Neck writes on the board that the United States ought to have shut down its borders in the year 1900, I get the impression that the students are feeling as though they have been led astray. Imagine sitting in a lecture hall and not paying attention to the instructor or what they are saying, and then suddenly coming across this sentence. Kids have a quick temper, and because their brains and minds are still developing, they are prone to making hasty judgments. Kids are hot-headed. When the passage states, (Speak 2011) children count backwards on their fingers in order to determine the year in which their ancestors arrived in the United States, it makes them feel vulnerable and helps them identify as immigrants. It seems to me that they, too, are experiencing feelings of disorientation. This is the moment when they have an epiphany and realize that if the borders were closed, their life would be vastly different. Young people's thoughts naturally turn to the life they are currently living, including topics such as home schooling, automobiles, and education. Life would be quite different for them here in comparison to where they might have come from
originally. When the author demonstrates that some of these children came from countries that hated them, did not have schools, or the fact that their country of origin had no future, I found that to be the most unsettling part of the book. These young minds may have wondered right away where they would be and what their future would hold, but we are left with a lot to imagine about both. Now is the time when we can instill critical thinking in others or begin laying the groundwork for critical thinking in the future. In the previous section of this text, it is stated that the subjects respectfully disagree with Mr. Neck's knowledgeable opinion. This is the ideal initiative to kick off the discussion and get a variety of people's perspectives on the topic. This one sentence demonstrates beyond a reasonable doubt that Mr. Neck holds this viewpoint. Kids, and especially teenagers, are unable to tell the difference between what is stated explicitly and what is merely implied, and they have the misconception that it is just because someone writes something, that automatically conveys how that person feels. In this instance, Mr. Neck can take the time to explain and develop a lesson on various points of view. In conclusion, I have discussed how this passage can give a young reader the impression that they have been betrayed by an adult, how it can cause them to feel a sense of loss for a future that may not have occurred, and how it can show how an incredible teacher can mold the way that you analyze a situation. My ancestors came to this country from another country. The reader is free to draw their own inferences from the information given. We are a nation that rests on many distinct foundations, which together make up one massive foundation.
