ENG 130 Module Four Decision Tree Template Creating a Thesis Statement Complete this template by replacing the bracketed text with the relevant information. Part One: First Part of the Thesis Statement Identify the topic . State the claim . Combine the topic and claim to form the first part of the thesis statement. Lay-offs in the tech industry The article written by Nadia Rawlinson claims large-scale layoffs in the tech industry have changed the balance in the workplace for remaining employees. Although illustrates the tech industry clearly, she fails to expand on the fact that this can soon spread to other industries. Layoffs in the tech industry have paved the road for an uncertain future, not only for other tech companies, but those working in any industry that may be deemed “over staffed.” As technology takes over most of what we physically and mentally can do, it is only a matter of time before layoffs are more prevalent. Part Two: Second Part of the Thesis Statement One reason the claim is true (how/why or why not) Another reason the claim is true (how/why or why not) Another reason the claim is true (how/why or why not) Combine the different reasons why the claim is true to form the second part of the thesis statement. Nadia explains that in 2022 150,000 people were laid off in tech, and the number is only increasing in 2023. Rawlinson gives the reader a great idea of how the turmoil in the tech industry is affecting the companies, employees, and those laid off. However, she rarely mentions how this can easily be a common practice amongst companies but does mention the reasoning that drove the tech industry into this chaos. Nadia discusses how the layoffs have created a grueling workplace, forcing employees to work longer hours at high efficiency. She furthers this by explaining the already demanding environment is worsening due to the high interest rates these companies have been facing. Nadia provides a great image for the reader to understand the unrest in the tech industry. From overworked employees to 150,000 layoffs, the future for the tech industry is uncertain. The increased interest rates have only pushed CEOs further into this change. However, Nadia fails to weigh on the massive impact this can have on other industries as the demand for a “human employee” gets smaller and smaller each year.
Part Three: Whole Thesis Statement Compose the thesis statement . Nadia Rawlinson provides the reader with a clear and concise idea of what the tech industry looks like for an employee. We see the changes in that industry, being tied mainly to layoffs, have been mostly negative towards the employed. With that being said, Nadia does not expand greatly on her thoughts about how this could potentially affect a different industry. Given the expediated rate at which we see this change in tech, providing the reader with thoughts on how this could impact industries outside of tech could prove useful for those who might experience a similar fate.
