Unit 4: Writing Assignment
Apply skills and strategies presented in this lesson to develop a plan for teaching from “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” (reading level 7.4 and interest level 9-12).
Your plan must involve a minimum of 4 reading comprehension strategies.
The first strategy that I would use is the prediction strategy. I would hand out a copy of the story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County” by Mark Twain to each student. I would instruct the students to look at the story's title and share with me and the class what they believe the story may be about. Doing this gets the students thinking about what lies ahead in the
story. It gets them interested and helps to set the stage for the story. Once they have read the story, we will all return to this discussion to see if their predictions were correct or even close. The second strategy that I would use is questioning. I would explain to my students that they are encouraged to ask questions while reading the story. They can ask things like, “Who are the characters?” “What is the plot for this story?” “Why did Jim leave his frog with a random stranger?” I would also encourage them to highlight any words they may not understand so they can look them up or discuss them together. Having students ask questions and highlight unfamiliar words helps encourage them to pay more attention to the story while reading it. The third strategy I would use is visualization. I would explain to my students that while reading through the story, they should visualize different parts of the scenes or what the characters look like. For example, “I found Simon Wheelers dozing comfortably by the bar-room
stove of the dilapidated tavern in the decayed mining camp of Angel’s, and I noticed that he was fat and bald-headed” (Mark Twain). If students learn to visualize while reading, they can paint a mental picture of a large gentleman with no hair sitting at the bar that looks like it has been

neglected and is about to fall apart. They will see the man sitting there so comfortably that it seems he is trying to stay awake. Visualization helps students to understand what the author is trying to portray in the story. Finally, after students have spent time reading the story and understanding what is going on, they will summarize. During this time, students will work quietly to write a summary of what
they have read. They can share what their predictions were and if they were correct. They can write about the different characters and where the story took place. Once they write their summaries, we will share our ideas with the class and discuss the other topics the students may have.
