Aliyah Woods Ball State University SPCE290_802 Essay Exam Chapters 1,2,3,4 A child named Abby with Autism Spectrum Disorder started showing symptoms of autism at the age of 2-years old. Her parents began getting concerned about several areas of her development pertaining to; Communication, problem behaviors, social interaction and stereotypic behaviors. Over time the parents observed the signs and symptoms in Abby’s behaviors such as hand flapping, lack of attention when they said her name, and tantrums. They brought her to the pediatrician and brought up concerns to the doctor regarding her developmental delays. Abby showed signs of communication delay by not saying words only saying a few sounds at the age of 2. Most kids Abby’s age uses 50 or more words and can join two words together to form a simple sentence. She was also having really big tantrums, she would kick scream flop onto the floor if things wouldn’t go her way is when we noticed the signs of problem behaviors. Abby’s engagement with other children as well as her siblings were not like a typical child. Abby engaged in stereotypical behaviors such as stimming on certain toys. Abby wouldn’t really engage with children around her. The Dr. referred Abby to an ABA clinic for therapy nearby. Her parents were very excited to know there was a ABA ( Applied Behavior Analysis)
therapy that would help Abby gain skills in areas such as social skills, joint attention, academic skills, etc. Once Abby registered at the clinic, the Board Certified Behavior Analyst started a direct assessment. A direct assessment as stated in (chapter 2 page 21) is observing and recording the child’s targeted behaviors, in order for the BCBA to develop a treatment plan for Abby. After about 6 months of receiving therapy Abby began to improve. Overall Abby displayed major improvement she began to communicate by pointing. She also started to engage with her siblings and other children around her and responding to her own name with eye-contact.
