Worksheet #2: “I Sing the Body Electric”, Bradbury, 1969 PART I: Find evidence of Bradbury’s additions. (Quotes & notes) 1.
Imagery: Find vivid imagery in the short story that is missing from the TV show.
Bradbury describes the dark and stormy night, with lightning illuminating the characters' faces, and the sound of thunder in the background. This creates a vivid image of the scene in reader's mind. This imagery is missing from the TV show. The TV show does not have the same level of imagery as the short story, and it does not possess the same sensory details. 2.
Rhythm:
How does the short story create rhythm? (ie. parallelism, punctuation, ellipses, or other techniques) The short story creates rhythm using parallelism and punctuation. For example, in the line "The eyes of the dead bored into the eyes of the living," the repetition of the word eyes creates a rhythmic effect. The TV show does not have the same level of rhythm as the short story, because it was wriGen in a more straightforward manner. 3.
Tone
: Find evidence of tone shifts in the short story. The tone of the short story is suspenseful, while the tone of the TV show is more lighthearted and comedic. In the short story, Bradbury uses language that is more evocative and suggestive, while the TV show uses language that is more direct and explicit. For example, in the short story, Bradbury describes the grandmother's eyes as being like "two black holes," while in the TV show, the grandmother's eyes are described as being "creepy." PART II: Respond to each prompt with a full paragraph.
1.
Electric Grandma 2.0:
The android that Bradbury writes in 1969 has more functions than the one he writes in 1962 for The Twilight Zone
. Explain how Electric Grandma 2.0 is an improved technology
(add more functions than were mentioned in the lecture). In the short story, Electric Grandma 2.0 is an improved technology that has more functions than the original Electric Grandma. For example, in the short story, Electric Grandma 2.0 can play music, tell jokes, and even make breakfast. In contrast, the original Electric Grandma is only able to play music and tell stories. This shows how technology has advanced over time. 2.
Body/mind link: Whitman focuses on the human body in order to show that it is linked to the soul (or spirit). Do you see this body/soul (or body/mind) link in the Bradbury short story? In the short story, the grandmother's body is linked to her mind, as she can control the robotic body of Electric Grandma 2.0 with her thoughts. This creates a sense of unity between the body and mind, as the grandmother can use her mind to control her body. This body/mind link is not present in the TV show. Instead, the TV show focuses on the relationship between the grandmother and her robotic body, without exploring the idea of a body/mind link.
