School increases Happiness Margraret Mawhorter Grand Canyon University ENG-107 Patrick McHugh November 12, 2023
Who knew that going to school could lead to an increase in happiness? Studies show that attending school and having that social interaction can lead to an increase in one's happiness (School, 2022). When we are accepted we thrive; therefore, children that build the necessary friendships in school can thrive and be happy. Some may not agree that going to school can lead to happiness, but there are a few reasons that going to school can lead to happiness. Going to school leads to happiness because new friendships lead to an increase in one's well-being. Going to school leads to more social interaction which leads to new friendships. When kids are at school they have social interactions which can then lead to more friendships. A study done at the University of New Hapture found that “Friendships and meaningful social relationships are essential elements for achieving successful outcomes for students” (Friendship, n.d). In school-age children, making new friendships can also build their self-esteem which also builds their social interaction skills (School, 2022). With school-aged kids having other peers their age to interact with is so important. Being able to play and interact with someone their age helps them learn life skills like sorting out conflict and getting along with others and with these skills children are less likely to have social and emotional difficulties later in life (School, 2022). It is so important for kids to learn to interact with kids their age. New friendships can lead to an increase in well-being. Everyday Health says that simply having a friend who counts on you can give you the motivation to take better care of yourself (Lawler, 2023). Everyday Health also did a study that showed “Those who have more social integration — as measured by marital status, number of friends, involvement with friends — had the biggest health boost” (Lawler, 2023). A study showed that it's more important to have quality over quantity meaning that having more close friendships is better for your well-being than
having many different friendships that may just be surface level (Jessi, n.d). In all, developing friendships in school can help increase one's well-being. Well-being can lead to an increase in happiness. Well-being can be seen differently from everyone's point of view, some may see it as mental health and others may see it as physical health. Either way, people view their well-being and it can affect their happiness. When the well-being of a person is increased whether it's their mental health or their physical health, that can leave them in a much better mood. A study shows that the relationship between well-being and happiness is growing rapidly (Steptoe, n.d). Happiness encompasses several constructs, including affective well-being, feelings of joy and pleasure eudaimonic well-being which is a sense of meaning and purpose in life, and finally, evaluative well-being which is life satisfaction (Steptoe, n.d). After reading this study it shows that when someone is ill that will affect their happiness. So the well-being of a person can have a major effect on their happiness. On the other hand, people may argue that friendship can hurt one's well-being. A study done by Harmony says that some friendships can leave one feeling confused and worse about themselves (Harmony, n.d). These friendships are classified as toxic and can have negative consequences on our well-being (Harmony, n.d). Some examples of a toxic friendship to look out for are, criticizing others and putting them down, gossiping about others, or drawing attention to themselves. Some ways to identify if a friendship is hurting your well-being are increased stress levels or a negative self-image of yourself. If someone is making you feel bad about yourself then that's a toxic friendship. On the opposing side, having a healthy friendship where they are building others up and enduring others is an example of a healthy friendship that can have a positive effect on one's well-being

(Steptoe,n.d). Having friendships with kids the same age and interests can build you up more than tear you down. In conclusion, going to school can lead to happiness because more social interaction can lead to new friendships and new friendships can lead to one's well being and one's well-being can lead to happiness. When people go to school and make new friends and build those relationships, they tend to be happier in the long run. The type of friendships built in schools can either have a positive or negative effect on one's well-being. Many people think that going to school can have negative effects on school-age kids, but not very many people think about how it can increase happiness.
