Planning and Reflecting
As I reflect on the planning process for the social studies lesson, I realize it was well-
planned to accommodate all learners in the classroom. Prior to the lesson, I studied the students for a month and gained some background knowledge about them. This helped me understand the capabilities of each student better. I used differentiated instruction to cater to the needs of all learners and made modifications for students with Ell learners. Integrating math and arts into the social studies unit was an interesting approach and the kids loved it. I also planned high-level thinking strategies to challenge them, while ensuring that they had the necessary support to understand the lesson.
Classroom Context
After collaborating with my host teacher, I was able to improve my lesson plan. She gave me some techniques that I had not thought of, such as asking questions and engaging in conversation with the students. Even if they went off-topic, the students appreciated it and were more willing to listen. Through this lesson, I was able to understand how the students differed and supported their individual learning strengths and differences. Knowing the students' needs and the environment in which they learn helped me address their learning styles. As I prepared for this lesson, I had some questions and answers that were built on the students' background knowledge, which helped them understand the goals and objectives. I had planned to use visuals on the smart board, such as a picture of George Washington and a video of his biography. To meet students' physical needs, I allowed them to choose comfortable seating positions, like sitting in the front on the rug. Some kids had a hard time sitting in one place, so I would sit at their desks by the teacher assistant. I would also allow them to work in small groups when working on the KWL chart, timeline, and storybook about George Washington. The students
were engaged and had a lot of questions, which showed that they had an awareness and understanding of George Washington..
Collected data of students
I designed a lesson to commemorate Presidents' Day, focusing on the notable president, George Washington. Since the students had already been taught about him in a previous grade, I utilized their prior knowledge to augment the lesson. As the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom, was also being taught on the same day, I integrated it into the lesson to establish a connection between George Washington's fight for freedom and the statue's representation of freedom. During the lesson, I explained to the students that life was difficult during that era, especially for African Americans and immigrants who migrated to the United States. As most of my students were Hispanic, they were able to contemplate and enhance their comprehension of George Washington. To assist with their understanding, I provided them with textbooks, visuals, KWL chart, and a timeline of his life, as well as a storybook. My objective was to enrich their knowledge about George Washington and his historical significance.

I am analyzing the use of differentiated learning opportunities in planning instruction and assessment for students with diverse learning needs. In my class, there are 1 student with behavior challenges, 16 ESOL students, and 6 PALS struggling readers.
For students with IEPs, I prefer to work one-on-one with them, using lots of visuals or having them work with a partner or in a small group with me during independent reading. Finally, the UDL framework allows us to work effectively in diverse classrooms by facilitating learning rather than retrofitting a "one-size-fits-all" curriculum.
My topic is about George Washington. To create a conducive learning environment, I encourage students to work with partners and ask questions. I provide students with opportunities
to improve their vocabulary by reading with a partner. For IEP and struggling readers, I work with them in a small group and alternate groups because of the large number of students with IEPs and struggling readers.
I engage students with open-ended questions and use video and audio features of George Washington. For Ell learners, I work a small group with them, allowing them to read and practice reading without having to write. The rest of the students will create a book with three important facts about George Washington including drawings.
Conclusion
Planning this unit took a considerable amount of time as I had to collect all the necessary information and create separate units. It was a challenging task as I had to keep in mind all the diverse learners in the classroom. I had to plan different activities and resources to cater to all the
students' learning and processing needs. Regardless of their learning level or any disabilities they
may have, my students will benefit and enjoy learning about our country's history.
