Response: Media producers create texts with an audience in mind, and while they try to remain entertaining and original in most of their films they also need to ensure that the audience is able to understand and engage with the text, and thus with the preferred meaning, by using conventions and generally accepted techniques. Analysis Of Run Lola Run Run Lola Run, is a critically acclaimed 1998 German Film directed and written by Tom Tykwer. The film focuses on Lola who has twenty minutes to come up with 100,000 marks for her boyfriend Manni, whom if she fails will be killed by his crime boss. The film shows Lola's three different attempts of procuring the money; in a video game like fashion. Run Lola Run, can be considered one of the most successful German films and masterfully plays with the themes fate and decision. Throughout Run Lola Run, editing is used expertly to explain and set the mood of the film, Tykwer's use of cross cutting, split screen, and flash backs sets the mood for urgency and passion. Time is emphasized very strongly throughout the entire film, from the very beginning the viewer knows that Lola only has twenty minutes to complete her task of getting the money. This immediately sets up the feeling of urgency but Tywker didn't stop there. The beginning scene where Manni calls Lola sets the scene perfectly with cross cutting. Cross cutting is when the scene cuts back and forth between different things that are occurring at the same time. In the beginning of the film Manni calls Lola and asks here what happened and why she was not there to pick him up. During their scene a lot of cross cutting takes place. When Lola is speaking it is on her and cuts to Manni when he is speaking. When Lola first answers the phone she ask where Manni is, with the shot on her we can see that she is concerned, this shot is followed by a panicking Manni who ask her where she was and why didn't she pick him up. We find out that Lola's moped was stolen and caused her to be late which in turn caused Manni to take the train and forget the bag of money. As the scene continues we find out that the money actually belongs to a crime boss Ronnie who will kill Manni if he doesn't have 100,000 marks. This is a very important scene because it sets up the entire premise of the film. The speed of the cuts are quite fast, only lasting a few seconds and emphasizes the dire situation that Manni is in. With the cuts so fast it sets the nature of the film to be fast paced, creating the mood of urgency. At the same time, the scene portrays passion.
