Writing and Compare-and-contrast Essays
Compare and Contrast
This type of writing assignment is common. On a standardized test, you may be asked to analyze
literature, evaluate ideas, or make a judgment and explain your reasons.
In responding to these types of prompts, you often will compare and contrast characters, concepts,
or choices. You will be asked to identify similarities and differences, which are the key to compare–
and–contrast essays.
There are ways to organize your thoughts about compare–and–contrast topics, which will help you
write thoughtful and balanced essays.
Compare–and–Contrast Essays
First, you will learn how to write a compare–and–contrast essay

The next step in preparing your compare–and–contrast essay is to gather details, descriptions, and
examples to provide a clear understanding of the subjects being compared. There are several ways to
gather details.
One way is to use your personal experiences. If you are writing about a subject with which you have
direct experience, your knowledge of that subject can be

Compare and Contrast Essay
Compare and Contrast Essay By definition; love is a profoundly tender, passionate affection for
another person. Love can be interrupted in many ways. Were we ever taught love or is it just a
natural feeling towards a person? Some say you'll know the meaning of love when you fall in love,
yet some don't believe in love at all.
The sculpture "LOVE" created by Robert Indiana and the sculpture "The Kiss" made by Auguste
Rodin both share some of the same meanings behind the art work (Indianapolis Museum of Art)
(Rodin's The Kiss Sculpture). A major similarity between the two is love; which attracts and speaks
to people all around the world. Although they are spoken in different ways, they both have the idea
of making love. Whether it be

This piece is also an abstract form of art and more modern the color is red and has a feeling of
happiness and joy and you have the urge to feel love just by seeing it so large and up front. "LOVE"
has always been placed out in the open demanding attention from a lot of people to see. "The Kiss"
is more of a classic form of art and has been placed in more private areas. Although it has a
distressing grey color "The Kiss" has more depth; the feeling of intimacy is strong and makes a
statement.
There are both similarities and differences in "The Kiss" and "LOVE". The emotion and meaning
behind both are incredible, it shows and understands the meanings of love, lust, joy, and intimacy.
Love can either be spelt out or expressed by action and is what both pieces show. Love can be
interrupted in many ways, but there always has to be a kiss in love.

Contrasting Patterns
What did you think of the two contrasting patterns in this chapter? Do you or someone you know fit
one or the other of these patterns? Which pattern do you think is more likely to emphasize modesty
over pride? Why? Which pattern do you think is likely to emphasize manners over honest self–
expression? Why?
No most of the people I know fit in somewhere in between. I think Pattern one emphasis modesty
over pride because they are taught to have personal power instead of blending to fit in. Pattern two
emphasizes manner over honest self expression. I feel that in a group manners will always be at the
top of the way that culture should act.
Prompt 2: Some people say that to talk about cultural conflicts creates a different mindset than if

The Compare/ Contrast Essay
First, let's explain compare and contrast:
When we compare, we show our readers a subject's similarities.
When we contrast, we show our readers a subject's differences.
Compare and Contrast essays are learning–process essays. You learn about your subject as you
gather and organize information.
This type of essay takes a bit of organization, and it's this organizational process, this gathering of
facts, that helps you learn as you go.
You will create lists of qualities or traits that each of your subjects has, and as you do this, you will
discover insights to your subject that, at first glance, you may not have realized were there.

And you will either compare or contrast, not both. Be careful, sometimes going point by point can
make your writing sound tedious and repetitive. Watch your language and transition words. Use
several points at a time.
Ending: As in the argumentative essay, bring it all together. Allow your ending to go back to your
thesis. Use the transitional words on the next page to help your paper's coherence. Transitions and
other connecting words and connecting sentences should be used throughout.
Remember: There are no hard and fast rules as to how many comparisons or contrasts you should
offer. For a thorough look into your subject, you must offer enough comparisons or contrasts or both
to make a valid statement.
Transitional Words (Conjunctival Adverbs)
Use these words to help you connect your thoughts, your sentences, and your paragraphs:

Compare And Contrast Essay On Childhood
A person's life can be summed up within a sentence, their childhood just a word. Time has the
interesting ability of warping. At the same time, it has the ability to take away sentiment from any
event.
Words can only express so much of an experience. One can only relate to an experience by sharing
that moment, even then the way individuals process experiences differs drastically. A prime example
of this is one's childhood
. People can share the same superficial characteristics, yet have two
different takes on childhood. Two male middle children with separated parents and two siblings can
diverge completely. Where does this lie? It lies within one's processing, which in turns creates
unique same experiences. Every individual is

The Stage For children, the greatest thing fought for is recognition. Especially as a young girl, it's
only natural to crave attention.
I grew up as an extroverted child. That's one of the reasons why I was attracted to the stage; it was
my domain, my home. My mom told me that my extroversion became apparent in one specific
situation. My family and I were at the beach for our annual beach trip and I was making sandcastles.
There was another little girl near us who was also playing in the sand. My mom told me that I
walked over to the little girl and just sat down and started playing with her, at one point she asked,
"can we be friends?" my response was, "I thought we were already friends."
The Dancer Growing up as an only child my best friends were the Disney princesses. I watched
them glide and dance along the screen, swinging in the arms of a handsome prince. They were
magnificent. Beautiful, graceful, and powerful. I wanted nothing more to join their brigade. At three,
I was put in dance classes to make this dream happen. Tap and jazz, definitely not the princess
dancing I imagined. This became apparent when the first recital came around. We were given
fluorescent, sparkly leotards. No ball gowns or even a tutu. I don't recall the reason for my following
actions, but according to my mom when all the other little dancers took position and began dancing I
didn't. I sat on the stage. My mother was furious,

Contrasting Friendship Essays
Contrasting Friendship
"The two ladies, who had been intimate since childhood, reflected how little they knew each other".
This is how, author, Edith Wharton shows the relationship of two characters, Mrs. Ansley and Mrs.
Slade, in the short story "Roman Fever." These two women who are supposed to be friends, led
envious lives of each other, and because of the way they lived they were very contrasting and
conflicting characters. In the end, I believe Mrs. Slade was guiltier for her actions and in fact the
whole incident would have never happened if it weren't for her.
Before there widowhood these two ladies led very envious and superficial lives. In describing her
friend Mrs. Slade says, "Mrs. Horace Ansley, twenty–five years

Nothing seems to be going on in this opening of the story, yet nothing could be farther from the
truth. The two women have been involved in a battle for the past twenty years, whether they were
aware of it or not. I believe the only thing that got these two women back together was them running
into each other after their husband's deaths, back in Rome
. If it weren't for that coincidence there
never would have been any more animosity towards each other. While discussing the beauty of the
landscape in Rome, Mrs. Ansley states, "After all, it's still the most beautiful view in the world. It
always will be, to me" (255). It is then, after Mrs. Ansley stresses the "me" in her statement, that
Mrs. Slade finally, after all these years unravels the whole incident pertaining to Mrs. Ansley's case
of roman fever. Mrs. Slade tells her life–long friend that it was she that sent her the note from Mr.
Slade, asking her to meet him at the Colosseum
. Mrs. Slade was jealous and wanted to keep Mr.
Slade no matter what the cost, so she sent the letter to get her friend out of the way for a few weeks.
It was like a shot to the heart for Mrs. Ansley that a friend would do that. According to Mrs. Slade,
"I did it as a sort of joke–at the idea that you were waiting around there in the dark". But, the joke
was on Mrs. Slade because it was then that Mrs. Ansley revealed her that indeed she did not wait,
she had responded to the note and Mr. Slade

Three of the main forms of counselling can sometimes be confusing. In this article I hope to unravel
and clarify some of the mystery surrounding these three types of counselling approaches by means
of comparing and contrasting with reference to their differing theoretical rationale, therapeutic
interventions and processes of change. The Person Centred Approach (Originator: Karl Rogers 1902
– 1987) focuses on the belief that we are all born with an innate ability for psychological growth if
external circumstances allow us to do so. Clients become out of touch with this self–actualising
tendency by means of introjecting the evaluations of others and thereby treating them as if they were

I chose to create a comparison and contrasting thesis statement, using the topics in number two and

provide a comfortable setting, with lazy boy style recliners, a fully stocked bar and an array of food

childhood, the picture, sound, and shape have evolved, to better fit the needs of consumers presently.
In the beginning of each thesis statement, I compared and then used three supporting facts to

Compare And Contrast Once More To The Lake
To me, the story "Once More to the Lake" sounded more like a compare and contrast essay because
the author is comparing some of his childhood memories and contrasting them with the memories
that his son is creating. The sentences were not too long and not too short; the author used many
comparisons and metaphors to support many of his points in the sentences. In my opinion, I think
that the author is successful in creating an interesting piece about memory due to how well he was
able to organize his content. For example, the author starts by explaining his own childhood memory
at the lake that took place many years ago; then, as the story progress, he is tentative to point out to
the readers what has changed in the lake over the years; what

Definition: In this kind of essay, the aim is to show the similarities and differences of two items, two
people, two countries, or how something or someone has changed. When comparing two things, we

Contrasting Themes Essay
Contrasting Themes?
When has one ever seen a film that could compare to the words written in the book? Movies are
almost always different, almost always never compare, and almost always have a different premise
than that expressed by a novel. The reason, one wonders, is because you have to keep the audience
interested. Ambrose Bierce's short story and Robert Enrico's film adaptation entitled, "An
Occurrence on Owl Creek Bridge," is a great example of differing themes in a piece of work. In the
entry, evident themes include: reality verses imagination and deception, war, death and dying, and
time. Some are expressed in the film clearly, while others are hidden to the untrained eye. Bierce
laid a concrete foundation for the theme of

Though both the motion picture and short narrative both fully cover the theme of imagination verses
reality, the story allowed its readers to find clues that he was most likely dreaming. Statements and
observations such as he could view "the individual trees, the leaves and veining of each leaf – he
saw the very insect upon them..." and being able to see the "grey eye" of his shooter allows the
readers to make their own assumptions that this is probably not reality (Bierce). In the film, the
ending came as a shock almost, yet in the story, it was not that big of a surprise (
An Occurrence at
Owl Creek Bridge
). There are no indications that the lead character was dreaming. The theme of
reality verses imagination leads to another important theme that can be found as the embodiment of
the story. It is evident that Bierce was making many references to war in his entry. The whole story
was built upon the idea; from the setting to the cause of Fahrquhar's death and from the shots being
fired to the reference to the Confederacy. War was directly linked to the previously mentioned
theme, imagination verses reality. The central character wants to be a war hero; which is an apparent
desire he had since he could not actually take part in the war effort for reasons not mentioned. Thus
his view of war was seen through a rose–tinted glass metaphorically speaking.

Growth Mindset Compare And Contrast Essay
"No matter what your ability is, effort is what ignites that ability and turns it into accomplishment."
Carol Dweck made that statement, as she explained her new concept of contrasting mindsets. She
called one The Growth Mindset, and the other The Fixed Mindset. These two opposing theories
ignited a spark in schools everywhere, and brought up an interesting question. Are students not
teachable because they don't believe they can be? A Growth Mindset is when, "people believe that
their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication, and hard work– brains and talent are
just the starting point,"Carol Dweck states, famous author of Mindset: The New Psychology of
Success, the book that started the outbreaks in different mindsets. This mindset is the belief that
people can evolve and change if they give enough effort, and persevere. A few of the advantages of
possessing a Growth Mindset includes seeing your flaws as an opportunity to grow, having a more
risk–taking personality, and leading a happier, healthier life. However, a disadvantage that
commonly occurs is turning a Growth Mindset into a False Growth Mindset, which is the concept
that a Growth Mindset is just being flexible, and open–minded, when indeed there is so much more
involved. Though the Growth Mindset

In the end, the company that used a Growth Mindset seemed to have happier employees, and
everybody was treated fairly, and equally. In contrast, the company that forced a Fixed Mindset had
favored employees that were treated on a higher scale than others because they had been born with a
higher level of intelligence and talent. Because different businesses treated their staff differently, the
results came to the conclusion that The Growth Mindset seemed more favorable in a work
