Essay 1 - What STEM-related topic are you most excited about? Why does this topic interest you and how have you taken the initiative to learn more about this topic? The 3rd grade living museum project. All around me I saw entrepreneurs, athletes, and actors. Then there was me wildly fascinated by the 1st American woman in space, Sally Ride. I found myself immersed in Sally Ride’s work. It wasn’t so much about her travelling into space, but the work she did for science as a whole. She transformed the world of science by inspiring many young girls, like me, to pursue STEM. I wanted to change the world as Sally Ride did. At a young age, my childlike natural curiosity led me to discover that I had a love for nature I discovered my love for nature, and I knew the mark I wanted to leave an undeletable mark on the planet. Nature elicited feelings of enthusiasm, freshness and happiness in me. From that young age, I always questioned the world. I wanted to know how the world and its contents came to be. These questions compelled me to want to know more. This curiosity for the environment was catalyzed by my 5th grade Science Olympiad event, Ocean Motion. Diving into the depths of the ocean opened my eyes to a whole new world underwater. The display and uniqueness of flora and fauna provided inexplicable beauty especially during sunrise and sunset. I never thought that studying for hours every weekend about large bodies of water would be enjoyable, but it provided me with a new found appreciation for the environment. In middle school, my participation in envirothon made me an explorer of sorts about wildlife, endangered species of NC, and contributions to their endangerment. Wildlife filled me with raw, unbridled passion as I looked for solutions to their endangerments. Ever since I could remember I was “that” animal girl, but viewing the larger picture of human-animal interactions only amplified the desire to help them. I was always blown away by the beauty and uniqueness that wildlife elicited. As a highschooler, starting the Charlotte branch environmental group for my volunteering program has allowed me to use my passion to support my community. I dream of not only using STEM to transform the environment, but to inspire youth. Currently, I spend two to four hours every week tutoring kids who do not have the same educational privileges as I do. During their reading practice, I use readings about the environment and wildlife with the hopes of stirring a love for STEM in them. When I learned that my 3rd grade teacher showed my Sally Ride project to another one of her classes I was moved because I might have inspired other little girls to pursue STEM, just like Sally Ride. Essay 2 - Please explain why you need to be a part of “School A”, and specifically how “SCHOOL A” can meet your future academic needs. I’ve been told I am somebody who easily gets obsessed with things from Taylor Swift to Marvel. When I find something I love, big or small, I involve myself in it greatly. “SCHOOL A” provides the learning environment I desire, with specialized courses offered that allow students to delve into the more complex topics and details of STEM subjects. Additionaly, School A and I possess a common vision. I, like School A, constantly work to explore the limits of nature by exceeding expectations. Additionally, my love for nature and STEM has been a major in deciding which school I would like. I know School A will provide me with an opportunity to learn the complex dynamics between nature, environment and STEM. I want to be able to truly engage myself in my interested courses, rather than scratch the surface and move on. Additionally, the rigour of “SCHOOL A” courses will definitely challenge me academically as well as prepare me for my future education and career. Particularly “SCHOOL A”’s environmental courses such as “honors climate change biology” and “honors green chemistry” will provide me with crucial knowledge and experience for my future goals. I aspire to pursue environmental science in the field of biochemistry to research and develop ways to promote the wellbeing
of our environment. I know that SCHOOL A will give me the perfect opportunity to follow my passion for science and STEM. Additionally, I am drawn to SCHOOL A it knows the value of diversity. I would like to learn with people from different backgrounds and religions. This way I will be able to gain more world views and perspectives. From the little research that I have done, SCHOOL A allows interactions of different cultures and ethnicities thus profoundly mimicking the real world. However, “environment” is a very complex subject, but “SCHOOL A” has the tools to create a solid foundation of knowledge for me to follow my passion to the fullest extent. “SCHOOL A”’s research opportunities for students have also intrigued me. Research is a skill that I enjoy, and would love to expand on even more. I have researched for Model UN papers and school assignments, however, the research offered by “SCHOOL A” will properly teach me how to conduct research effectively. The biology and chemistry intensive research courses are the core courses that intrigue me. These courses offered at “SCHOOL A” are special opportunities for my academic career. The mentorship program is another program I am very interested in. Being able to work in a real life scientific setting will allow me to learn in ways I wouldn’t in a regular classroom. It will also help me create a network of people to learn from and gain support from in the world of STEM. Essay 3 - Tell us your story! Explain one interesting thing about yourself that you have not yet shared with us. What makes you unique from other students who are applying to “SCHOOL A”? Everybody is unique in their own way and I am no exception. I have been brought up in a family that recognizes the value of hard work and resilience. I belief my uniqueness stems from the fact that I do not give up easily. These values were instilled in me by my mum who easily juggled two part time jobs without breaking a sweat. I hold dear the tenets of hardwork, self-discipline and perseverance since I realized early in life that with much effort comes much prosperity A good example that shows my resilience is when I had to learn Kathak (Indian dance) afresh. “Back straight, feet together, and smile” are the words I used to hear every week at Kathak practice, but no matter how much I hear those words Kathak (an Indian classical dance) will remain a part of my life I will never stop loving. I think back to the time when I dreaded hearing these words. I was in fifth grade and had just moved to Charlotte, and all I can say is that I wasn’t happy about it. I had to leave my school, friends, and all my memories of Georgia behind. One thing kept me sane during this time though, having a Kathak studio 15 minutes away from our new place. Although, when I had my first class I was not prepared for what was to come. It was all so different. The choreography, the moves, and basically everything else was completely different from what I had learned in Georgia. I just couldn’t keep up with the level I was placed in, so I did what I was dreading. Going back to basics. The intensity was too much. Each day after practice I went home drained both physically and emotionally. I even contemplated quitting. At this point I hated dance. I didn’t want to do it or even think about it, what I wanted to do was quit it. After a talk with my mom and some serious self reflection, I knew I couldn’t do that. I worked hard to learn all I could, and eventually was able to be bumped up to a higher level earlier. I look back at that time with gratitude now. I learned that starting over is not a bad thing, and that I have the ability to adapt to ever-changing environments around me. Kathak has taught me so much that I should be grateful for, such as discipline, work ethic, and how to carry yourself as an individual. After passing 3 international Kathak exams with the result of first class with distinction, I can say that Kathak has a significant part in what has made me into the student I am today. Finally, I cannot highlight all my unique abilities in this short essay, however, I also love learning about new cultures and ethnicities and your school will give me the opportunity to learn in an environment that embraces diversity. My character revolves around being an open and analytical person who leads from the front.
