Analysis of Architecture in Photography Essay
Analysis of Architecture in Photography
I have decided to look at architecture for my next genre in photography. I have chosen architecture
as it is very different to fashion photography and looks at totally different materials and includes
different characteristics. In the early years of photography
, few if any photographers were specialists
in any area other than commercial portraiture, which was the main area in which a living could be
made from the new medium. Early photographers did fairly often photograph buildings, often
working from the window of a convenient room rather than at street level.
Many of the images from this era can truly be described as monumental, giving the subjects

Even thought the photo only consists of blue, it is made up of lots of different shades of blue.
The lights on the building and around it stand out because they are a bright colour. I think the way
the sea blue colour merges into the deep blue/black colour of the background works really well.
The photograph doesn't really have a story to it, as there isn't much going on, it doesn't have energy
or any movement to it at all. However it could easily be a scene used in a film, such as an
establishing shot. The photo has a certain peaceful feel to it. It is soothing to look at; this is because
it is a calm, quiet setting– you can almost feel your presence there, staring into the beautiful view. I
think the reason that the photo has such a positive, relaxing feel to it is down to the fact that the
composition of the photo reminds you of a deep blue sea or a clear black sky. The photo has strong
verticals and horizontal, which emphasise a static feel and the negative space.
The picture has a large depth of field with the two buildings the centre point of it. Only natural
lighting is used for this photo, therefore getting the exact time of day right would have been
essential.
The photo also has some negative points to it. The angle at which the photograph is taken from
makes the picture looks really flat and plain, For instance if

The Great Depression Photo Analysis
This photo is a newspaper from the stock market crash of 1929, when the Great Depression started.
On October 29 of 1929, the most shares in history were traded, and billions of dollars were lost.
While this was not the sole cause of the Great Depression, it was a key factor of the Depression. By
1933, about 30 percent of the workforce was unemployed because of this. The Great Depression is
very relevant to this exhibit because if more than 15 million americans had lost their jobs, then they
probably couldn't afford to have a maid. Even if the whites were employed, some people's incomes
were cut and it would be harder to have a maid. This meant that more Domestic Workers were out of
jobs and they then will have trouble fending for themselves

In times, we often see things, but we don't really capture what is beyond it. In some cases, there are
people who are artistic and are prone to see what other's cannot visualize. Every individual has a
talent which can be expressed and processed differently. Something you see can mean entirely
divergent things to someone else;for example, some may see thing's that may seem simple, but in
the eyes of an artist, it can be perceived with a whole new definition, dimension, and a potentially
new discovery. As a photographer, my view of the world
, can be skewed towards looking at
everyday objects as potential art, but it wasn't always like that.
To begin with, photography appeared to me as something entertaining a simple step in which

Each week I would strive to get the best comment of criticism and the best photo of the week.
Everyday we were intellectually taught about the different principles of photography; for me it
wasn't a hassle to learn it; it was more of an excitement a new adventure.
As I became increasingly fascinated with photography, a burning passion became to increase inside
of me. The need to take photographs was captivating; not only was it for a grade, but an escape I
used to drown my feelings. Photography was now becoming a way of expressing myself.
Excitement rushed through my veins as the teacher would announce my name for the best photo of
the week; an unforgettable feeling that would fulfill my ambition and made me feel virtuoso. After
the end of the first semester, I began to feel as if a transformation begun inside of me. A
transformation that began as a passion and turned into an obsession. Everywhere I saw I could see
all the plain and ordinary things or objects of everyday life, but suddenly they became a whole new
world; a spellbinding sensation that would make me fathom the double meaning of life
. For
example, hands are not much of importance to a person with no artistic view, but a photographer
may view hands as aging, a sign of unity, caring, loving, or cry for help.
Determination is the key to fame or an accomplished goal. As stated, winning photo of the week was
an enormous accomplishment for me being allowed to have

Personal Reflective on a Photo Essay
Personal Reflective on a Photo
Photos bring memories back to life. Each photo tells a different story, sometimes things you don't
always like to remember.
The photo that I have chosen is of a young girl in a pretty formal dress. She is holding a packet of
Minties, her favourite lollies. Her grandma gave them to her right after she performed in a concert
for her dancing school.
Athol Williby School of dance, a place she'd been going to for 3 years, since she was 7 years old.
Every Monday her mother would drop her off out the front of the old office building. She'd walk
down the laneway round the back, up the old wooden stairs into a change room.
A change room where all the older girls gossiped as she and her friend arrived.

As everyone was arriving the young girls noticed how many people actually went to the dance
school. They were shocked; they'd only seen the older girls that gossiped in the change rooms before
class.
As the doors opened and everyone moved into the building, a tall lady with red curly hair and a big
noise came into view. She was screaming instructions at everyone; they just kept walking through
the doors.
The young girls walked into change room 8. It was huge with ballet costumes on hangers.
There were lights around the mirrors just like in the movies. The little girls felt very glamorous.
They were told to sit on the ground and wait until Marie, the lady that would be looking after and
helping them get into their costumes, came.
The young girls sat and waited patiently, giggling excitedly about which costumes they would get to
wear.
All of sudden like a gust of wind the door flung open and in came the screaming lady with red curly
hair and a big noise.
All the young girls gasped. Marie as she was called stood over all the girls and looked down on
them.
"Why aren't you girls in your costumes yet?"
Everyone looked down, no one said a thing everyone was too scared.
"Well hurry up them, it's those ones on the rack over there"
Everyone rushed over to the rack she had pointed at and started putting on his or her costumes.
"I'll be back in 5 minutes, all of you

Photography Essay : My Passion For Photography
My passion for photography began in High School, from the moment I walked into Photography 1, I
was in love. I seemed to have a good eye when it came to landscape and animal photography, after
hours of taking photos I would then spend hours in the dark room developing. For me, photography
has been no more than just a hobby. I admire all professional photographers, especially those who
specialize in newborn photography
, because I envy them. I found Jessica Kennedy, of Jessica Rachel
Photography, on Facebook. Her style and ability to take beautiful photographs captured my eye
instantly. I did, what most people do, and followed her. I am always amazed when her pictures
display on my newsfeed, especially the newborns, I just can't help but look. Kennedy's loved for
photography started with an obsession with her taking pictures of her children and turned to
photography as a hobby. Then with a gifted DSLR (Digital Single–Lens Reflex) camera she started
researching classes in her area. She states "from there is snowballed", taking any opportunity that
came along to gain hands on experience. She started her business in 2011, and then in 2016 her LLC
(Limited Liability Company) business began. She started by advertising through Facebook and
'word of mouth'. She feels social media is the easiest way to connect with clients, without the burden
of cost. Kennedy also partners with her local OBGYN clinic and Stork Vision ( a pregnancy
ultrasound office), by displaying her work for free

You should avoid blazing sunshine at noon because it would make your photos become too shine.
When taking photo outside, if the angle of sight is against the sunlight, you can use the flash. You
also can use a dedicated light to light up some dark area caused by sunlight such as: eye socket,
neck, and so on. Do not let the light from the back get all the attention of the main character. When
talking photograph at night, pay attention to the distance between the flash and the subject. If it is
too dark, use more lights.
Next, take many shot at the same sight in order to choose later. Taking many shot helps you to
improve your skill and increase the chances of having beautiful photos. While you taking photos,
many mistakes may happen. We do not want our beautiful photographs depreciate because of those
small mistakes. So take many shot at each sight and pick out the most beautiful one.
Then, hold you camera steadily. Some people often shake their hands while taking photo so the
photo will be blurred and dim. And of course, that photo will be useless. Try to keep your hands and
your feet steadily when taking photograph. You can use a table tripod or any other fulcrums to help
you hold the camera. In short, try to hold the camera steadily to make the most beautiful
photographs.
Finally, use editing photos software. One of the most popular editing photos software today is
Photoshop. With Photoshop, you can make your photos much more beautiful as by

Memorable Family Moments Caught by Photography
Family photographs have enabled me to develop a way to keep my family with me all the time, even
when they are really not there. These pictures of my family represent a wide variety of importance
and emotions in my life. Many of them serves as a link to my home life, since I am away at college
without my family I allow their pictures to be decorations (memoirs) in my apartment. Some of
them mean more than others, some are recent, and others come from my childhood. A picture I have
framed on the center wall in my apartment is of my family on vacation this summer; it depicts our
true "selves" and exemplifies how much we truly love one another. I am

These are usually the times where they snap pictures of their love ones to create memories of happy,
quality times with one another, especially if these times are not easy to come across. On my family
trips and on the family trips of others the idea of being united and having fun together is exemplified
through these informal photographs we take. In an article by Judith Williamson called "Family,
Education, Photography
", she discusses how "with the informal arrives a new element, never so
highly developed as in contemporary family photography: the necessity of 'fun'"(339). Families in
turn can show the fun they have with one another in these pictures of their vacation and other
informal, happy times with one another. Judith Williamson's article also has several other important
viewpoints on family photography and how it has changed over the years. She states that "in earlier
family images it seemed enough for the family members to be presented to the camera, to be
externally documented; but now this is not enough, and internal states of constant delight are to be
revealed on film"(339). Today, the element of displaying the true "self" in pictures gives more
meaning to the photos and how we in turn value them. When photography was first developed only
the upper class families could afford these portraits and thus the norm for what family photographs

Importance of Photography
Photography I. Introduction: Society is generally inclined to consider innovative concepts as being
something extraordinary and most of its members come to shape their personalities and their lives as
a whole on account of these respective innovations. Photography is probably one of the most
illustrating innovations that took place across time, especially when considering the effect that it had
on people at the time when it was invented. While individuals previously considered that paintings
were able to capture images in all of their greatness, science proved that photography was even
more effective in this field. The internet stands as evidence that photography has come to be one of
the most influential media concepts in society, considering the wide variety of photographs and
photography–related websites that can currently be accessed by anyone using the media device. II.
Cameras, Photographs, & Color for Everyone A. What is photography and what do we need in order
to perform it? 1. The advent of the film camera for the average consumer In order to accurately
understand the concept of photography and how it came to influence the lives of individuals in the
contemporary society one first needs to understand how photography evolved from being accessible
to a small group of individuals to being accessible to anyone who could afford a cheap camera. The
emergence of the 35mm film camera had a strong effect on how people perceived photography, as it

Time Photo Descriptive Essay
The sweeping vista stretches out before me, offering a delightful study in contrasts, mountain, lake,
sky, and desert, a feast for the eyes and soul. Not just the stark beauty, I feel the serenity and
isolation of this place. Time seems frozen as I look out over this sun–drenched panorama that
stretches for miles. My perch atop the sand dunes is nearly perfect for drinking it all in. The
tranquility is almost palpable, like a hug. This impression is heightened by the warm desert air that
embraces my skin. There is no wind to disturb the surface of the shimmering turquoise lake, busying
itself with reflecting brilliant desert sunlight. The lake's edges nestle against buff–colored sandy
shores. How smart was Nature to choose this sumptuous pallet for this time and place, muted beige
and stunning aquamarine, to place them side–by–side in this solitary landscape with a faithful
mountain standing guard nearby? I wonder about the water's temperature. If I dip in my hand, will
the water be cool and invigorating? Or warm and welcoming instead? I wonder about the water's
journey that brought it to rest in this lake. Did this liquid jewel start out as snow high atop the
distant Andes peaks, to end up here refreshing the silent desert floor? The early afternoon sunlight
bounces off the sun–dappled lake surface. Beyond the lake's distant shore, a chocolate–colored
mountain rises from the desert floor pushing its powdered sugared peaks into the cobalt sky.

Thesis Statement About Photography
The purpose of my study is to give people a chance to understand what is the meaning of
photography and how it was invented, plus how people was able to take photographs before the

The significance of my study is that nowadays, a lot of people or its better to say most of people
thinks that they know everything about photography and they think that they are an experts and a

year. Photography became so much easier than before, there is a huge difference between cameras
these days and cameras from that time, and only god knows what they will invent and how it will be

The Power of Photography Essay
Have you ever taken a picture or been looking through a photo album and felt a sudden rush of
emotion? Do you wonder what caused that emotion? Many find themselves captivated by a
photograph and overwhelmed by the emotions that the photograph arouses. Believe it or not the
arousal of emotion from those photographs was not caused by the content of the picture but by
certain elements within the photograph. When a photograph is viewed it is not only the subject that
triggers the overwhelming emotional response, it is the length of time that the film was exposed to
sunlight, the way lighting is used and played with, and the strong detail of colors or lack thereof.
While many believe that the subject acts as the primary stimuli to emotions, the

Lastly, a huge component to a photograph that aids in arousing emotion is color, bringing out
different emotions whether color is present or not.
When talking about emotion it seems a fairly simple topic and immediately "
feeling
" words come to
mind; sad, happy, and confused. These are basic emotions and easy to understand. What isn't so
simple about emotions is their process and how they form and work. Emotions are reactions to
sensory information like sight, smell, taste, touch and sound (Tracing Emotion's Pathways 94).
However, it is not that simple; an emotional reaction or response is made aware of and understood
by a part of the brain called the sensory cortex. These emotional responses or reactions to sensory
stimuli are processed by a part of the brain called the amygdala (What's An Emotion). The amygdala
is a huge asset to the cognitive factors of emotions because in processing emotions you become able
to understand, recognize, and control them. So then how do emotions evoke a physiological reaction
such as tearing up when one feels sad, laughing with joy, and trembling with fear? These
physiological reactions that one may experience come from the autonomic nervous system. The
autonomic nervous system is, "a collection of fibers that extend throughout

Essay about Photography
The Test of Time: The Power of the Photograph
What is a photograph? The simplicity of taking a photograph leads many to ponder its artistic value.
Yet, it is undeniable that there are some photos that cause an emotional reaction deeper than simply
observing a recorded point in time. Surely, there are photographs that cause more reaction than some
modern art pieces. There seems to be two types of photographs. The first classification is the 'time
capture' photo – an image with the sole purpose of recording a particular event or point in time. The
second nature of a photo carries a 'deeper meaning,' which has the ability to change the observer's
mood and cause a reaction. But what distinguishes these two varieties? There are a

There is clearly an artistic value to this image – it is taken at the location of a massacre of over 200
members of the Great Sioux Nation. However, did Elliot Erwitt intend a 'deeper meaning' for this
photograph
? In an interview recorded on his official website, Erwitt declares, "If it turns out to be
entertaining what I do, I'm very pleased. But it's not conscious." It seems that Erwitt claims to not
possess artistic intent in his photographs. However, it is clear that he simply boasts an unconscious
artistic eye. It is obvious that the photograph of this church on hallowed ground falls in the 'deeper
meaning' category. The second Elliot Erwitt photo is taken from his official webpage. It too is
captured in black and white. The photo, shown in Figure 2 was taken in France and depicts a man
and child riding a bicycle down a road lined with trees. This seems to be a 'time capture' photo; this
particular event can never be perfectly replicated again. Despite the category in which this photo
clearly falls into, it is undoubtedly still art – the setting is too perfect to be unintentional. However,
according to Erwitt in his interview, unintentional is exactly the correct word. Erwitt states, "I take
pictures of anything that interests me as I walk around with my camera." This means that many of
his photos are taken on a whim; the right place at the right time. In this case it is the viewer who
makes the distinction between

Photography : Reflections Of The Past Essay
Photography: Reflections of the Past
Photography has taken over the modern world. On every screen, on every wall, on every building is
most likely a picture that has been taken and processed. Photography has been around since the
1800's and has opened an immense world with endless possibilities. Photography was the gateway
to videography which has become a vast part of many cultures. Not only does photography have a
history of its own, it is also a visual record of history. It has recorded many of the world 's greatest
milestones and several personal ones as well. Photography allows people to look back at a moment
and reflect. Photography is the art of taking and processing photographs, which ultimately allows
people to look back and reflect on a moment.
The idea of displaying an image and capturing it dates back almost 2000 years ago; it was known to
the Chinese and the Greeks. The camera obscura was an empty box with a hole on one end where
objects outside of the hole were displayed on the other wall. Artist could then trace the objects
thereby preserving the image. Although it is not fully mechanical and the image is only as good as
the artist, it laid the foundation for many other cameras to come. ("History of Photography")
The Daguerreotype was one of the first reasonable cameras. It was invented by Louis–Jacques–
Mande Daguerre. Daguerre was a French romantic painter and printmaker. His partner Nicephore
Niepce was also a painter and was in search of a way to capture an

Descriptive Essay On My Family Picture
My family picture includes my Mom, Dad, younger sister, dog and myself. In the drawing, my
younger sister is reading outside under a tree in our backyard. My sister enjoys having time to
herself reading or listening to music over socializing at get–togethers. Likewise, my mom is
gardening in the backyard in the picture. She enjoys spending time outdoors and caring for the
garden to make our backyard look beautiful with the colourful plants and flowers. In my picture, my
dog is located in the backyard with my Mom and sister. My dog loves spending time outside playing
and prefers to have company then be left alone. In the picture, my Dad is taking a photo of a
waterfall in Costa Rica during a recent vacation. My Dad does not enjoy staying in one place for an
extended period of time and prefers to be out instead of relaxing on the weekends. He does
photography as a hobby and will search out to find picturesque locations to set up his camera
equipment and wait for the perfect lighting for a picture. In the family picture, I am in the kitchen,
which overlooks the backyard, baking banana bread. Similar to my sister, I prefer spending the time
to myself instead of socializing at get–togethers.
My family picture, upon first look appears to be a bright and colourful family picture but upon
analyzing with a critical eye, the picture portrays family dynamic and individuality. The Kinetic
Family Drawing (KFD) test can help provide insight on how a child views themselves and

War Photography Essay
War has always been an unfortunate part of our society and civilization. War will sadly and
undoubtedly be with us as long as we exist. However, the portrayal of war for many centuries gave a
sense of patriotism and romanticism. Then the invention of the camera changed how humanity
perceived war in the late to mid 19th century. And all of a sudden, images of war became of shear
violence and destruction. The violence in these images would play a significant part in the social and
political standpoints of war in our nation. During the pre–Civil War era, the technology of
photography was rare or still in development. All renderings of war were either in paintings or in
literature. Since artists were the only people capable of creating

Writers following the Civil War wrote novels in response to the violence. They depicted that the
future of war would be evil, apocalyptic, and destructive on a massive scale. Mark Twain was one of
the writers who discussed this kind of scenario in one of his novels. "'In that explosion all our noble
civilization–factories went up in the air and disappeared from the earth...twenty–five thousand men
lay dead around us'" (Franklin 814). The images that showed all of the dead and the destruction, no
doubt caused people to believe that the rise in industrialism would lead to more mass destruction.
Many writers depicted in their novels, landscapes of gray, craters, and death. It was as if these
writers were warning us, that if we as a society don't industrialize properly and responsibly, that the
future of our planet would be just like the landscape described by these writers. They saw this rise in
technology as a doom to civilization. However, the warnings of these writers disgracefully became
reality. Much of Europe a few decades later during WW1, had landscapes that were gray, cratered,
and full of dead bodies. A great change came during WW1 and WW2. War images were not the only
way war was portrayed, but motion pictures also came along. The motion pictures gave a whole new
perspective on war to the American people. Thus, by seeing this influence, many powerful leaders
saw an advantage. They saw, "the tremendous potential of movies for propaganda and

Many landscape photographers desire an image which appears sharp throughout the scene, so that
elements of foreground interest, such as a rock in a lake, look just as sharp as the distant horizon.
This can be achieved relatively easily using the principles of depth of field whereby the smaller an
aperture you use, such as f/22, the greater the area both before and beyond the point of focus

Capture Movement
Most people think about landscapes they think of calm, serene and passive environments – however
landscapes are rarely completely still and to convey this movement in an image will add drama,
mood and create a point of interest. Wind in trees, waves on a beach, water flowing over a waterfall,
birds flying over head, moving clouds make image nice.
Capturing this movement generally means you need to look at a longer shutter speed
. This means
more light hitting your sensor which will mean you need to either go for a small Aperture, use some
sort of a filter or even shoot at the start or end of the day when there is less light.
8. Work with the Weather
A scene can change dramatically depending upon the weather at any given moment. So, choosing
the right time to shoot is of real importance. An overcast day threatening to rain might provide you
with a much better opportunity to create an image with real mood and ominous overtones. Look for
storms, wind, mist, dramatic clouds, sun shining through dark skies, rainbows, sunsets and sunrises
etc and work with these variations in the weather rather than just waiting for the next sunny blue sky

The Relationship of Photographs, History, and Memory
Abstract: This essay reflects on the relationship of photographs, history, and memory based on a
found and mutilated photo album. Photographs provide opportunities for disrupting and
restructuring history with their attraction to memory; they privilege the subjective, creative power of
the personal explanation and provide an emotional and even ideological grounding for memory.
Photographs as manifestations of memory assist in the process of understanding the present.
As this century fades into the past it is worth remembering that its course––in contrast to earlier
times––has been chronicled by a visual narrative that relies on the attraction of photographs as
means of storing

The violent markings of the photo album and its images, however, produce an equally powerful
message that jars the memory as it disrupts and distorts the photographic chronicle of her life and
that of her family and friends. The result is a complex visual experience that addresses the use of
images in producing knowledge and making history.
Photographs are re–collections of the past. This essay is about photography, memory, and history
and addresses the relationship between photographic images and the need to remember; it is based
on the notion that seeing is a prelude to historical knowledge and that understanding the past relies
on the ability to imagine. At the same time, the role of thought and imagination in the production of
society––as reflected in the earlier work of Louis Althusser (1970), Maurice Godelier (1984) and
perhaps more significantly, Cornelis Castoriadis (1975), suggests yet another role for photography in
the construction of a social and cultural reality. Photographs in capitalist societies contribute to the
production of information and participate in the surveillance of the environment where their
subjective and objective qualities are applied to the private uses of photographic images in the
perpetuation of memory.
Photographs are also manifestations of time and records of experience. Consequently, writings on
photographic theory are filled with references to representations of the past. Roland Barthes (1981,
76), for instance,

Capturing a Moment with Photography
What can a picture really say? Photography can capture moments in time that will always hold a
special place in one's heart allowing them to remember the emotion they felt during that time.
Picture manipulations have been around for centuries and still exist today. In a popular picture from
1936, Dorothea Lange displays two forms of manipulation. She removed something so little, which
represents so much by a method called technical retouching. It changed the whole emotion of the
picture. She also stage–managed her photo's to hide very important details that would have changed
the whole effect of the photo. Modern manipulations exist by Photoshop and could be more
effective than ever before. "Long before Photoshop and other image
–editing tools, artists,
photographers, and composers were manipulating images. We still live in a culture and world where
we want to assume that cameras provide us with an objective truth" (When Images "Lie", 2011).
Trying to convey a message can be difficult, but with a little altering the message the photographer
is trying to portray can become clearer to the viewer. Trying to covey a message through a picture
can be extremely difficult because not everyone sees the vision of the photographer. Stage–
managing is when you set up a setting in a way that delivers an illusion for the viewer to perceive.
Photographers usually do this when they want to put emphasis on a certain subject. Lange Stage–
managed her most popular image, Migrant
