The Great Gatsby Analysis
Although the timeline is kept vague in The Great Gatsby, F. Scott Fitzgerald makes it clear that his
work of art is based in the early 1920's between World War I and the Prohibition. This was a
transitional period in the United States. America changed after the war and as a result, so did life.
The idea of the perfect life fluctuated as troops began flooding back to the United States
, migrating
to cities, picking up jobs, and buying houses for their new or planned families. The economy was
booming, jazz became the new popular music, woman (more commonly referred to as "flappers")
and men were expressing their freedom by having parties and hanging out in clubs or bars, Henry
Ford just introduced the Model–T which made automobiles

How did the idea of the perfect family compare to what an average family consisted of? There
wasn't much of a difference between the ideal and average family structure at the time, in fact, the
average became the ideal. The families focused on new values such as children's education–– rather
than child labor–– and the blending of gender roles of men and women as a result of women's new
political rights such as voting. Although gender roles were being blended, families remained partial
to the gender roles of the father always knowing what's best and being the primary breadwinner
while the mother remained a caregiver (Home Life in the 1920's). Taking this information into
account, Nick, Daisy, Tom, and Gatsby are expected to meet the criteria of an average family
structure in the twenties: own a household with a spouse, have an average of 4 or 5 people living in
the household, have children who pursued education, and are beginning to blend gender roles
between the mother and father while remaining partial to the father knowing what's best and the
mother being a caregiver to their children.

The Great Gatsby Analysis
Throughout the novel The Great Gatsby by Scott F. Fitzgerald Jay Gatsby is constantly fighting a
one sided battle for Daisy Buchanan's love. Gatsby shows great dedication to Daisy by doing
anything and everything to please her and almost relive their past relationship. This includes,
throwing stunning/ massive parties in her honor, showering her in his newly found wealth, and
offering her everything under the sun. It's almost as if Gatsby main goal in life isn't to be successful
(as it once was when he was a child) but to win over Daisy. Jay treated Daisy the way every girl
wants to be treated, but it just wasn't enough for her. The poem "Love song, with two goldfish" by
Grace Chua shows some of the same affairs as the book. Obsessed is an understatement when trying
to describe Gatsby's feelings for Daisy. He wants to be around her all of the time. Gatsby in fact
buys a house so he can be near her, "He had waited five years and bought a mansion where he
dispensed starlight to casual moths–––so that he could "come over" some afternoon to a strangers
garden"(Fitzgerald 78). His dedication to receiving her attention is impeccable. Not to mention the
green light that Daisy represents to Gatsby, "For he gave me a sudden intimidation that he was
content to be alone––– he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I
was from, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward––– and
distinguished nothing except a single green

The Great Gatsby Analysis Essay
Diction: In the Great Gatsby, Fitzgerald utilizes a heavily elegant and sometimes superfluous diction
which reflects the high class society that the reader is introduced to within the novel. The speaker
Nick Carraway talks directly to the reader. The diction is extensively formal throughout the novel
using high blown language the borders on being bombastic. An example of this formal language is
seen when Nick states,"The truth was that Jay Gatsby
, of West Egg, Long Island, sprang from his
Platonic conception of himself. He was a son of God±a phrase which, if it means anything, means
just that±and he must be about His Father's business, the service of a vast, vulgar, and meretricious
beauty." The words "platonic" and "meretricious"

The tone is hopeful and dignified. Much detail is used and even some ironic detail such as Gatsby
being "gorgeous." Even though one would not normally describe a man with such a word it fits
perfectly in this sentence. The language is formal and it reveals Nicks positive view on life and on
Gatsby. The syntax in this passage is made up of strung–together sentences and clauses. All of the
sentences within this passage are complex or compound–complex. These long and airy sentences
emphasize the tone of upper–class people speaking as well as the emphasis on a dream. The
sentences are extensively poetic and carefully thought out giving it a nonchalant and superior tone.
Passage 2: "I didn't call to him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone – he
stretched out his arms towards the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could
have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a
single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once
more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness." (pg 16) The
diction in theis passage is a little less elegant than the previous passage because this passage is
reflective of Gatsby's true nature. It is one of insuperiority and one of a dreamer who sees his dream
right across the bay but yet it is so far away. It

Essay about Great Gatsby Film Analysis

Critical Analysis: The Great Gatsby Film
The classic American novel, The Great Gatsby, presents a major theme of passing time. Losing
Daisy meant losing Gatsby's entire world, which he only kept alive through his hope of repeating the
past. Daisy is a symbol of everything he values and therefore became the entity of his dream: his
dream of spending the rest of his life with Daisy, the woman he loves undeniably. But Gatsby
doesn't realize his dream is unattainable because unfortunately, he cannot go back in time or recreate
the past. Gatsby is stuck in the past, longing for the relationship between him and Daisy, and can't
accept the future
, resulting in his own death. This is depicted in

Their hands are so close, but never actually touch or come intact with each other because the two are
metaphorically so far away from each other in that their relationship only exists in the past, and not
in the future. A few scenes later, Gatsby and Daisy are shown kissing through a pond with an
unstable reflection. The water is agitated and quivering endlessly as opposed to still and calm. The
murky and unsteady water depicts a sense of "oldness" in Daisy and Gatsby's relationship. Because
the shot is a reflection, it's as if the moment is false or an imitation, as if they are "reflecting" on a
memory in the past. The framing of these scenes denote Gatsby's stark refusal to accept what he
cannot control: the passage of time.
A prominent color in the movie and novel of The Great Gatsby is green. It is the color that
represents Gatsby's hope. For example, the green light across the bay that Gatsby associates Daisy's
house with is a symbol of his destiny with her. Also, Gatsby gives Daisy a ring with a green jewel
but because he is her past and she is married now, she tells Gatsby to keep it. As the movie
progresses and Daisy and Gatsby spend more and more time together, green became more and more
visible. The most prominent scenes of green were a series of cuts. Daisy and Gatsby sitting between
multiple trees cuts to a bird's eye view of the pair running through a forest, which then cuts

The Great Gatsby Analysis
Lavish parties, rich man, huge house, drinking everywhere, rich and poor. This is the lavish life of
Jay Gatsby. The Great Gatsby is a story of a man who has almost everything, Money, Huge house,
but he is missing one thing, his true love, Daisy. He bought a huge mansion in west egg just to be
across the bay from Daisy who lives in east egg. The central theme in the Great Gatsby is that you
cannot have everything no matter how rich you are.. In the Great Gatsby, Francis Scott Key
Fitzgerald shows many different sides of the complicated character Jay Gatsby
, some good and some
bad. While Gatsby shows many different sides of him, the sides that are most prevalent are his traits
of having a complicated history based on relationships or
...show more content...
Therefore, Gatsby is a complex character because he has a complicated history based on
relationships or actions Another way Gatsby is a complicated character is because he may not
always be reliable or trustworthy. This is shown by Fitzgerald many times in the text. For example,
he doesn't sound the most credible or convincing at times. A notable example of this trait is when
Nick and Gatsby are driving to the Plaza Hotel and they are talking and Nick asked, "What part of
the Middle West? Gatsby replied "San Francisco" Nick thought "His voice was solemn, as if the
sudden memory still haunted him, for a moment I thought he was pulling my leg"(65). This quotes
shows that Gatsby may not be the most reliable person, and he may not be from the midwest or San
Francisco because they are totally different places. This quote also exposes Nicks suspicion to what
he is telling the truth about and what he is lying about. Another Example of Gatsby not being the
most reliable or trustworthy is when Nick is with Gatsby and Gatsby says, "'I was brought up in
American and educated at Oxford, because my ancestors have been educated there for many years'"
(65). Nick thinks "he hurried the phrase 'educated at Oxford.' Or swallowed it, or choked on it, as it
if had bothered him before, and with his doubt, his statement fell to pieces" (65). This quote is a
very important piece of evidence into Gatsby's past, Because if he lied about going to Oxford, he
could have lied about anything else.

The Great Gatsby Analysis
In "The Great Gatsby" a novel written by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Fitzgerald discusses the American
Dream and the Pursuit of Happiness. He expresses throughout the novel how the idea of the
American Dream is romanized and ultimately impossible to achieve, which is shown through the
careless and selfish social values and through the 'easy' money (made by Gatsby) causing this idea
of the American Dream to become warped and and corrupted. The large contrast between the two
social classes of the upper class– 'old money' and 'new money' is also expressed throughout the
novel, where Jay Gatsby portrays the self–achieved newly rich, while Daisy and Tom Buchanan
represent the aristocracy of the 'old money'. Fitzgerald portrays this large contrast

Daisy's and Gatsby's reunion starts in the rain which has connotations to the doubtfulness of Gatsby
for this not to go as planned and for her not have the same feelings towards him. As the sun appears,
Gatsby decides to invite Nick and Daisy back to his mansion to further impress Daisy and try to gain
her love, which has been used throughout this whole time to impress and get Daisy's attention. As
Gatsby demands the compliment from Nick, "My house looks well, doesn't it?" "See how the whole
front of it catches the light." (89)The reader is able the see Gatsby's insecurity and the need for
perfection and fabulousness to impress Daisy with.
As the three enter Gatsby's mansion, the reader is able to notice how surprised Daisy is as she states,
"That huge place there? She cried pointing." (90) Seeing that Nick is a very observant, he notices
how Daisy seems to love the idea of this enormous, and lavish mansion that Gatsby owns. This is
recognized when Nick tells us, "Daisy admired this aspect or that the feudal silhouette against the
sky, admired the garnes, the sparkling odor of jonquils [...] and the pale gold odor of kiss–me–at–
the–gate." (90) As the three continue inside, the reader sees the use of amplification as Nick
describes each

The Great Gatsby Analysis
The tried and true story of Jay Gatsby will never lose its relevance in our American culture. The
story of love and pain takes place during the roaring 20's and provides layers of symbolism, whether
it be the green light or the valley of ashes. The novel The Great Gatsby was written by F. Scott
Fitzgerald in 1925, and since has been adapted many times to television, plays and movies. The
most recent remake of the novel was released in 2013 using the same name. Directed by Baz
Lurhmann, The Great Gatsby was yet another successful remake to hit movie screens across the
world. Contributing to this success is the popularity of the original novel and the marketing tactics
used, among other synergies.
In April 1925, nearly a hundred years before the release of Lurhmann's film, F. Scott Fitzgerald
published The Great Gatsby in April 1925. The next year in 1926, it was adapted for the first time as
a silent film by director Herbert Brenon (The Great Gatsby (1926)). The novel was not a smashing
success right out of the gates, selling fewer than 25,000 copies before Fitzgerald's death in 1940
(Donahue). However, after his death, the novel rose in popularity to become one of the most
acclaimed American works (Mizener). It was added to high school curriculum in America and was
adapted into a film in both 1949, directed by Elliott Nugent (The Great Gatsby (1949)), and 1974,
directed by Jack Clayton (The Great Gatsby (1974)). The novel has sold upwards of 15 million
copies in North

2nd Quarter Analytical Essay – Artistry and Quality (Argumentative) In the novel The Great Gatsby
by F. Scott Fitzgerald, there is a distortion in the story and that was living the American dream and
matrimony. Fitzgerald has implemented many examples that are clearly shown that distort these two
concepts. The American dream was a common goal many people wanted during this literary period
in which this story was written. One major concept of living the American dream was being wealthy
and having wealthy items in your possession. Also, having a significant other with kids and owning
a large, fancy house. To then, eventually retire from your job and live the rest of your life in luxury.
Fitzgerald implemented a lot of these icons and has

His status of near bankruptcy has most likely been like that for a while. This resulted in his wife
Myrtle, saving all the money she can to help with his bankruptcy status. This quote shows the type
of environment George lives in a how he gets excited to see a potential customer in his office. "The
inside was unprosperous and bare; the lone auto visible was the dusty wreck of a Ford, which
crouched, in a dim... a moist glow of hope sprang into his light bluish eyes" (Fitzgerald 25). Notice
how the garage is described and how George's eyes got hope in them thinking that he has a possible
customer due to his financial problem. People in the higher regions of wealth had an increase in
income distribution, which takes away money opportunities and potential additional income from
the people that do not have wealth if any at all in the population. This is why George Wilson and
people that fall into this category stay inactive as far as financial opportunities being given to them.
While people similar to Tom have opportunities to earn or get money at their convenience, even if
they do not need it or want it. Matrimony is the state of finding your significant other in which you
love, and marrying them to live the rest of your lives with. The concept of marrying someone should
be taken very seriously and many do take it serious. No one should should marry anyone just
because they

The Great Gatsby Analysis
The plot of The Great Gatsby, a novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is driven by Jay Gatsby's love for a
woman named Daisy. All of the events in the novel leading up to the final tragic death of Gatsby all
initiated from his dream–like pursuit of Daisy. The development of Gatsby's feelings for Daisy in
their years apart was similar to the feelings evoked by the lyrics of "Hey Delilah", a song by the
band Plain White T's. An important factor that affected Gatsby and Daisy's relationship was the
distance that separated them, and the same could be said about the couple in the song. The muse,
Delilah, was in New York City while the singer was "a thousand miles away." The song quickly
established the singer's infatuation for her through lines praising her beauty such as "Times Square
can't shine as bright as [her]." In the bridge of the song, the lyrics mentioned ways of erasing the
distance between them, with one of the lines remarking that the singer would "walk to [her] if [he]
had no other way." This just shows how much he wants to see her again. Even more, the chorus
repeated the line "Oh it's what you do to me" to represent the effect that the girl had on the singer
even though she's so far away, and that he was constantly thinking about her. This sort of longing
across a distance was similar to how Gatsby felt towards Daisy all these years. Soon after falling in
love with Daisy, he went off to war and then attended school at Oxford. He was not able to meet
with Daisy for

The Great Gatsby Analysis
he Great Gatsby was wrote by F. Scott Fitzgerald. He is mostly known for The Great Gatsby. He's
thought to be one of the best writers ever. In this essay i will be discussing the characters and what
colors they resemble. Jay Gatsby is the main character in the book, he was around 30 years old and
lived in the West Egg.When we first meet Jay he's very poor and "low class". He falls in love with a
girl named Daisy. He is completely astonished by her and her wealth.Daisy being filthy rich wants
nothing to do with a poor man. When he comes back, Daisy becomes interested into Jay because
when he came back he became rich by bootlegging. Daisy–being married– begins to have an affair
with Gatsby. In the beginning of the book he was green and yellow because he was reaching for the
green light and because of his hope, and then he turned black for taking the blame for killing
Myrtle.' Nick is the narrator and neighbor of Gatsby, he is also around 30, lives in the West egg, and
was in a relationship with Jordan Baker. He serves as a confidant for those with troubling secrets.
He was Daisy's cousin and Tom's friend.I think Nick goes with the color orange for his loyalty and
grey for his darkerside. Daisy Buchanan is from the East egg. Dais and her husband Tom are people
of old money she has a baby daughter Pamela. Daisy and Tom's relationship is bad. He is abusive
and has an affair . Also, Daisy and her daughter Pamela's relationship is not good, because Pamela is
always with the nanny.
