Date & Time
: Tuesday, November 7, from 5:10 to 8:10 pm (California time). his is a 180-minute (3-
hour) exam, to be taken during regular lecture time, starting at 5:10 pm and ending at 7:40 pm.
-- Exams must be submitted to bCourses before 8:10. No late exams accepted.
--After you submit, make sure that you can open and see your document in bCourses.
-- DSP 150% end time is 9:40 pm (4.5 hours), 200% end time is 11:10 pm/

: Students are required to have their cameras turned on during the exam. Be ready to stay on camera until you submit your exam (have a phone camera ready as back-up for this and for emailing your exam).
Submitting
Exam
: Students are required to use the Google Drive/Google Word Document platform which will automatically save work as you type. Use the same document so your GSI already has the link to this shared document; make sure you set the document to share so your GSI has editing privileges. Once you have completed the exam, save it as a Word document that you then upload and submit on BCourses

Tip
: Email yourself your draft every 20 minutes to avoid problems if you encounter technical problems. Late
exams will not be accepted. This way you can at least get partial credit if your computer crashes.
Open Notes
: Do not use any online resources during the exam (don’t Google search anything).
This is an open-note, open-book, open-lecture slides, typed exam. As such, you will have access to the readings, lectures, lecture slides, and your notes, but not to any online resources. It is expected that students have been preparing robust and copious notes directed at answering the questions on the page 2 “study guide”. Without organized and strategic notes (main arguments, sub-arguments, how a reading addresses the questions, etc.), it is unlikely that the exam questions can be answered thoroughly and succinctly. : You must directly
answer the questions

and always stay focused on making your argument throughout the essay. Essays that are written with general information will not score well. You must directly use course content

at the top. Make sure you develop a clear, concise, cohesive, strategic, organized, and strongly written essay focused on the main argument. Consider using an outline.

All the text of the essay must be written in your own words. To make the best use of the time and space, just paraphrase and do

from course resources. Only use authors’ last names; do not include the titles of the readings.
You don’t have to cite chapters separately. Use 1) in-text reference like this, “O’Connor explains….” or 2) in parentheses reference like this, “State retrenchment has played a role in urban poverty (

).” Note the placement of the period outside
the parentheses.

(as indicated in the question); make sure to include the key authors on a subject. If the question is about mass incarceration you must have Alexander, for example. The
essay is incomplete otherwise. Highlight the author or title in yellow

Including 4 authors is the minimum. Some essay topics have several authors directly or indirectly covering that topic. If you only include 4 authors, make sure these are enough to craft a strong main argument and provide enough material for a robust essay with examples.
Reference the required videos/films
(as indicated in the question); make sure to include the videos/films that speak directly to the essay topic. Highlight the video title in pink.
Include 10 examples
from the indicated sources (lectures, readings, videos). As you develop your main argument and sub-arguments, you will need to provide very specific examples
to prove your points. General examples will not count. Highlight examples in green.

Example of an example: Highlighting the author’s last name in yellow and examples in green:
Specific: “
Davis

Follow citation instructions: when you quote, you have to add your words, the sentence can't only be the quote. The period goes outside the parenthesis.
General Essay Writing Norms & Expectations:

The main argument can't be the full paragraph.
Make every sentence count; filler sentences and words make the essay weak.
Always be proving your arguments.
Do not summarize; your reader knows the material, so assume as much.
Be persuasive, prove your main argument, and prove your sub-arguments.

As an essay, the writing should be very clear, succinct, strategic, logical, organized, and persuasive; make a clear, cohesive argument
that ties together your ideas around a main argument
(or set of related ideas for this first one). What is your main argument in your essay? Always stay focused on that argument. You are providing your analysis by showing evidence from the readings and films; always be making your point, and stay focused. Be efficient with your words. Important!
Do not summarize
or otherwise review the sources. You will lose points. We have read these articles, so you don't have to go over the content, just jump into your argument, and convince your reader of your argument. Use each
word to craft your argument and to explain your evidence. You have a limited number of words, make sure you are using all your space with as much of your own thoughts and writing as possible.
Choose One Essay Question: The essay is worth 50% of the exam grade. The grading
for the essay will be
out of 100 points.

Gender, Gender Relations, and Women in Planning: Theory, History, and Practice Planning theory, histories, and practices have very clearly left out gender, gender relations, and the
contributions of women in planning. Using Spain, Wirka, Hayden, Falu, and lecture
create an argument explaining the ways in which including these omitted contributions in theories, histories, and practices can help us understand city planning and urban
communities better and how they can help us “do planning” more effectively. Craft an original essay argument
drawing from all 5 sources
to engage all three topics (theory, history, and practice) to answer the question. Take each of the topics, theories, histories, and practices
, and explain what our sources have said about each, including the lecture. Open with a main argument and a paragraph that introduces your argument, then have a section dedicated to each topic. In closing, instead of saying, “in conclusion”, engage this question: What other
omissions do you know or imagine are missing in planning theories, histories, and practices? What are they and why and how would it be important to make them “visible” in planning but also in society?

A Case Study: Urban Planning and the African American Experience
The theories, histories, and practices of urban planning have had enormous, lasting, and ongoing impacts on many communities. The course has provided content explaining and exploring the experience of the African-
American community, looking at policies, practices, and community agency in movements and solutions. Using 1) Alexander, Norris, and Summers readings and 2) the films/videos Lopez, Alexander, Carter, and Malcolm X create a strong and clear argument, centered on the Coates article, explaining the ways in which policies, practices, and community agency (in movements and solutions) have been documented and discussed in the course. Take each of the topics, policies, practices, and community agency, and explain the African American experience, according to Coates, and how the other sources support the history he presents. Open with a main argument and a paragraph that introduces your take/argument, then have a section dedicated to each topic. In closing, instead of saying, “in conclusion”, engage this question: Where are there specific similarities between the African American and Latino urban experiences noted in the readings or shown in the films? Bonus if you use Rojas and CDOT very specifically. 9
