Lateral Reading: Is Moore's Law Dead? Question 1: How does Nvidia improve their GPU architecture? This question was sparked by the statement “Huang’s whole business model at Nvidia is still responsive to “Cramming,” nearly 50 years later, clinches the article’s status as the most influential essay of the 20th century.” This statement led me to wonder h
ow Nvidia upgrades their graphics card and how modern Nvidia graphics cards compare to older generation ones. The sources I used for the answer are articles from Analytics Vidhya and MakeUseOf, two websites that are well-trusted in the tech world. Analytics Vidhya is a platform for AI and Data professionals while MakeUseOf is a tech guide website that provides helpful information when is comes to hardware and uses of gadgets. I avoided using articles written by Nvidia or any companies associated with them to avoid biased data. Answer: The modern RTX GPUs feature more CUDA and Tensor cores compared to the older generation GTX GPUs, these cores are essential for accelerating deep learning tasks and AI capabilities. They also speed up training times for large neural networks significantly. (Sharma, 2023) Tensor cores perform better on numerical tasks, whilst CUDA cores are more adept at handling graphical ones. Although they collaborate and can be somewhat substituted for one another, their primary function is to manage their respective areas of expertise. (Abidi, 2023)
Question 2: How has the evolution of integrated electronics, shaped the trajectory of the semiconductor industry? This question is inspired by the statement "The future of integrated electronics is the future of electronics itself," It made me wonder how significantly the evolution of integrated electronics affected the future of the semiconductor industry.
The sources I used for the answer are articles written by professionals in the semiconductor industry and people who are experts at the topic and dabble in them every day. For example, an article written by Fiori Technology Solutions Inc., a company specializing in Semiconductor design. Answer: Other than smartphones and computers increasing the use of semiconductors, there is also a huge increase in use in other applications, for example, automobiles and IoT devices. (Okabe, 2023) S
emiconductors have also become the foundation of innovation in the electronics sector. They offer the facilities and know-how required to precisely construct integrated circuits at the nanoscale, satisfying the increasing need for electronic devices that are faster, smaller, and more efficient. (Inc, 2023)
Summary: The article discusses Moore's Law, which was originally proposed by Gordon Moore in 1965. Moore's Law, although not a true scientific law, predicted that the number of transistors on a silicon chip would double approximately every year or two, leading to rapid advancements in integrated electronics. The article connects to topics of CNIT176, especially the History of Computing topic as it highlights the impact of Moore's Law on the semiconductor industry, the development of integrated circuits, and the subsequent growth of a global economic sector. Reading such articles is helpful for people pursuing a career in IT as it allows them to better understand the foundation and concepts that build up the Information Technology field, it can prevent mistakes or help shape future innovations. I was not able to find any part of the content of the article that may be misleading or incorrect, the article is mostly presented using historical observations.
