Locate each of the following components in the x-ray circuit drawing in your text.
Explain the purpose of each.
a.
Power supply- is supplied to the x-ray machine to precisely 220 volts
b.
Circuit breaker- protects against short circuits and electric shocks
c.
Auto transformer- is an adjustable transformer controlled by the kVp
selector on the operating console. It directly determines the voltage
applied to the x-ray tube to produce x-rays.
d.
Exposure timer- easier to control a low voltage than a very high one. It
determines the reduction gear used and therefore the time it takes to disk
to move from the on and off switch.
e.
Step up transformer- used to increase the voltage from the
Autotransformer to the kilo-voltage necessary for the x-ray production.
f.
Rectifiers- this device is made up of two semiconducting crystals (p-type
crystal and n-type crystal) the crystals are joined to form a solid-state
diode. It converts from two alternating current into a single direct current.
g.
Rheostat- controls filament temperature and the rate which electrons are
boiled off of the filament
h.
Step down transformer- used in the filament to increase the current by
reducing the voltage that is applied to the filament.

Two of the circuits will be a 3-wire, multi-wire branch circuit (Edison 3-wire). The location of the devices is to be determined by the student. The student shall be responsible for selecting the correct circuits, do not ask the instructor which circuit number should be used.
