Name __Christen George____________________________ Worksheet Chapter 4B 1. Locate each of the following components in the x-ray circuit drawing in your text. Explain the purpose of each. a. Power supply- is supplied to the x-ray machine to precisely 220 volts b. Circuit breaker- protects against short circuits and electric shocks c. Auto transformer- is an adjustable transformer controlled by the kVp selector on the operating console. It directly determines the voltage applied to the x-ray tube to produce x-rays. d. Exposure timer- easier to control a low voltage than a very high one. It determines the reduction gear used and therefore the time it takes to disk to move from the on and off switch. e. Step up transformer- used to increase the voltage from the Autotransformer to the kilo-voltage necessary for the x-ray production. f. Rectifiers- this device is made up of two semiconducting crystals (p-type crystal and n-type crystal) the crystals are joined to form a solid-state diode. It converts from two alternating current into a single direct current. g. Rheostat- controls filament temperature and the rate which electrons are boiled off of the filament h. Step down transformer- used in the filament to increase the current by reducing the voltage that is applied to the filament. i. Filament wires- j. X-ray tube 2. What factors can the technologist control from the operating console? A technologist controls the on/off controls and selects kVp, mA, and time or mAs 3. Describe how the AEC works. Describe where ionization chambers are located in relation to the x-ray tube, patient, and image receptor.
4. For a half wave rectified circuit waveform: a. How many rectifiers are required to achieve this waveform? Two rectifiers b. What is the percentage of voltage ripple in this waveform? 50% 5. For a full-wave rectified circuit waveform: a. How many rectifiers are required to achieve this waveform? 4 rectifiers b. What is the percentage of voltage ripple in this waveform? 100% 6. For a three-phase rectified circuit waveform: a. How many rectifiers are required to achieve this waveform? 6 b. What is the percentage of voltage ripple in this waveform? 13% 7. For a high frequency generator circuit waveform, what is the voltage ripple? Less than 1% 8. Describe how the amount of resistance in the variable resistor will change when the control panel is set for 800mA vs. 200 mA.
