Correlation coefficients Using the “politics college N 389.sav” data set, do the following: 16 Calculate the correlations coefficients for the associations between number of hours watching Fox news, MSNBC, and CNN (variables: Foxwatchn, msnbcwatchn, and cnnwatchn) and the cultural attitudes of social dominance orientation and hostile sexism (variables: SDOscale and hossexismscale). This can be done all at once; include all 5 variables in the correlation pull-down menu box (cut and paste the correlation matrix output to the Word file). Answer the following. 1. Interpret the correlations among the three news network viewership variables (variables: Foxwatchn, msnbcwatchn, cnnwatchn). Are the number of hours watching one network informative about the number of hours watching the others? What is the strongest association; briefly interpret, i.e., why do you think viewership between these two networks most highly correlated? The association between how often someone watches Fox News and how often someone watches MSNBC shows me that there’s a moderate positive correlation. The association between how often someone watches Fox News and how often someone watches CNN shows that there’s a moderate positive correlation. The association between how often someone watches MSNBC and how often someone watches CNN shows me that there’s a strong positive correlation. The association between Fox News and MSNBC is .373 and the association between Fox News and
CNN is .362 which is moderate. It can be assumed that together CNN and MSNBC will be more than .30 which is correct because the association between CNN and MSNBC is .534. The strongest association is between CNN and MSNBC because the Pearson correlation is .534 which is considered a strong association. I think the viewership between these two networks are the most highly correlated because they had moderate associations (closer to almost .40) with Fox News rather than having no association or a weak association. 2. Regarding the correlations between the different news network viewership variables (Foxwatchn, msnbcwatchn, cnnwatchn) and the two cultural attitude variables (i.e., social dominance orientation and hostile sexism) , which is the strongest associations? Provide a brief interpretation of this association, i.e., explain what might be going on with regards to viewership of this news network and this cultural attitude. The association between dominance orientation and hostile sexism shows me that there’s a strong positive correlation. After seeing all associations I can report that dominance orientation and hostile sexism have a stronger correlation than the news network because it’s Pearson correlation is .561 which is higher than what any association news networks had (which was .534 between CNN and MSNBC) Fox News is the only network that shows good results between dominance orientation and hostile sexism. Hint 1 : Absolute values (ignore the sign) of correlations around .10 can be considered weak associations; correlations around .30 can be considered moderate in strength; correlations .50 or larger can be considered strong associations. In between these values, e.g., a correlation of .20, can be referred to as “small to moderate” strength association. For correlations with values close to zero, we can say there is no association. Hint 2: focus only on the values of the Pearson correlations in the output. Ignore “sig (2 tailed)” and “N” part of the output. We’ll discuss that later.
