Do you believe Unilever sponsors the Shakti program to help women, to boost its own profits or both? Explain your answer . I believe that Unilever sponsored this program for its benefit and the benefit of women in India. Corporate social responsibility is a way that companies can regulate themselves and be answerable to their stakeholders, the community, and the organization itself. Corporate social responsibility is so important in that it forms the breaking point or turning point for some consumers when deciding whether to purchase goods or services from a company or not. Some consumers will not purchase products if a company is not environmentally friendly or exploits community members. Apart from that, some investors will not invest in a company that is not socially responsible, and even some stakeholders might even pull out of a company that is not. Therefore, I believe that Unilever decided to initiate the Shakti project to attract more investors and consumers because it appears socially responsible, i.e., this was a way of advertising the company, but It has also changed the lives of the women in India and given them a sense of purpose, so it is a win-win. If Unilever has mixed motives, does this discredit the company in your eyes? Should it? It does not discredit the company in my eyes, and it should not because it is still a company and has to make money and profits at the end of the day to stay afloat. If they cannot turn over properly, they can no longer sustain CSR efforts. They are much better than some companies that are just corrupt anyways exploit workers and consumers to make profits with no benefits. How is this program an example of both corporate and personal sustainability ?
It is corporate sustainability because Unilever has found a way for their products to reach those in remote areas in Shakti India through the help of women and men within these areas. It has done it in a cost-effective and environmentally sustainable manner. It is personally sustainable as these women have been empowered to become micro-entrepreneurs; therefore, they have a sustainable source of income and are educated on how to run a business, which also benefits their brothers, sons, and husbands, thus uplifting the whole household. Could this model program be duplicated elsewhere, in another area, and with different products? Why or why not? Yes, this model could be duplicated in rural areas in Africa and can include different products such as soaps as their lifebuoy product or oils such as Vaseline. I think it is possible because India is a third-world country. Project Shakti was done in a very remote area of India, so it should not be difficult to replicate the same model in a rural area in Africa.
