Hollywood Strikes Report Abby Flaugh, Crystal Nguyen, Maathir Al Harthy, Wiam Ambusaidi, Asila Who was involved in the Hollywood disputes? The Hollywood dispute has accrued in different periods involving different unions from different production industry sectors. The main unions that came together were the Screen Actors Guild- American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG -Aftra) foundation and the Writers Guild of America (WGA) striking about the financial compensations. The average income of the writers has dropped significantly compared to several years ago. In addition, writers were expected to use AI as a guide for their research but not be entirely replaced by AIs. Several actors finally joined the picket line for the first time since 1960, including Olivia Wilde , Allison Janney, Rosario Dawson, Susan Sarandon, and Margot Robbie ( Barbie ), who carries the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros (Alexis, 2029). The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) was also a part of the strike, as they are involved in negotiations on resolving problems related to compensations, employers' and workers' concerns, and priorities. They also manage the changes in technology and other aspects that affect the film and TV production business. What did each party involve want? There are many different needs each separate party involved is looking for. One of the main parties, the Writers Guild of America (WGA) is chasing after several particular goals. Writers typically go on strike to negotiate better terms for their work, including higher wages, better health and pension benefits, and residuals for the reuse of their work in various media (Ng, 2023). The Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) is also looking for several different outcomes. The producers aim to control costs and maintain profitability. They may resist certain concessions demanded by the writers to protect their economic interests (Ng, 2023). Negotiations between these parties are complex and can involve compromises on both sides. The specific issues addressed in each negotiation can depend on industry trends, technological advancements, and the economic climate at the time. What was the geographical impact of these strikes? The majority of the Hollywood stikes occurred across various locations in California, where most of the filmmaking industry is located. However, other particular states across the U.S. and Canada also experienced negative affects of the strikes, including Georgia, New Mexico and New York City. There are many geographical impacts due to the Hollywood strikes. One of these is the fact that many companies and people that happened to be located in the states most affected by the riots frequently got thrown under the bus, even though they might not have been involved in the strikes in the first place. Many local Californian citizens suffered as actors pulled back on
their spending, which caused an overall 2.1 billion economic loss. This created a mass reconsideration of how people spent money on larger purchases, including buying houses or cars. These decisions, on a mass level, create local housing crises, raise rent prices, and can cause families with lower income to leave the state. Were the incentives of the parties involved the same? The incentives of parties involved in Hollywood strikes have varied over the years because different strikes were driven by distinct issues and demands. Each strike typically had its own set of circumstances and grievances, and the parties involved—such as writers, actors, and producers pursued different objectives. The Hollywood Writers' Strike (2007-2008) writers incentives were to increase their compensation for work in new media, including issues related to jurisdiction and compensation for reality and animation writers (Strunck, 2023). The producers aimed to control costs and adapt to changes in the industry while maintaining profitability. However, the Hollywood Blacklist (1947-1960) strike involved another 2 parties the house Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) who aimed to investigate and eliminate perceived communist influences in Hollywood and the Studios who implemented the blacklist to avoid controversy and maintain a positive public image during the anti-communist fervor of the time (Strunck, 2023). On the other hand the Potential Strike in 2023, the parties Writers and Actors (WGA, SAG-AFTRA) incentives was requests for higher minimum compensation across all media sectors, increased residuals, fair compensation for TV series writing throughout the production process, greater contributions to pension and health plans, the enhancement of professional standards, and overall improved protections for writers (Strunck, 2023). What was the economic impact of these strikes? The Hollywood strikes had a big impact on the economy, especially in California. About four months after the scriptwriters started striking, it was estimated that the impact could be almost $5 billion, and it was expected to increase (Stewart, 2023). The strikes cost a lot of money, affecting many people and businesses, like crew members and caterers. The economy in Southern California was especially hit hard, losing around $2 billion because of the writers' strike. In addition, the strikes caused problems in making films and TV shows. This led to an estimated cost of over $6 billion in lost wages and business impacts, not just in California, but also in states like Georgia and New Mexico that do a lot of film production (Stewart, 2023). In Los Angeles alone, each day without production costs about $30 million.
