Greetings all. Logistics and supply chain are similar in that they both involve delivering a completed product to its planned destination. Supply chain management refers to the entire journey that goods or services take to get from your company to the client ( Gen X, 2024). It also includes the materials used to manufacture and package the product. The term “logistics” stems from the military, which used it to describe how military personnel obtained, stored and moved their equipment (Gen X). Logistics refers to the movement of goods through an organization. The two terms intersect at various junctures, but they are not the same. The main difference appears to be that the supply chain includes acquiring the goods needed to manufacture a product, while logistics entails the storage and shipment of those goods. Logistics takes on three different activities: storing, shipping, and delivering goods (Gen X). However, none of those activities relates to how the products are made, or how the materials are procured, which are supply chain considerations. Logistics activities are considered part of supply chain management, taking into consideration how you store and ship your products, but logistics planning does not necessarily include supply chain management. As far as costs are concerned, the supply chain focuses on reducing the cost of production and operating costs. Logistics focuses on the cost-effective delivery of those goods. Which categories do each of these terms fall under or is it both? 1. Procurement of raw materials to manufacture a product. 2. Storage of goods. 3. Shipment of goods. 4. Production of goods. 5. Planning the production and shipment of goods. --James Reference: Gen X (2024). Differences, similarities, and roles between supply chain management and logistics.
