5.2 Course Project Phase 4 Submission: Putting it all together Deandre S. Wheelington ECPI University CIS101: Computer Configuration Instructor Wendy Davis July 25, 2021
This entire part of this course project has been about assembling all the parts required to build a computer of your choice. The computer of my choice was to build a high-end gaming pc capable of operating at the fastest speeds and highest settings of today’s latest games. Now that I have all the parts and components, it is now time to install all of them. I will go over how to install each component and the proper measures to take when installing each component. The first step to assembling our components into a working computer, is to first install the motherboard and the processor. We first need to take the proper safe measure before installing any of our components. This measure is to prevent electric static discharge (ESD). In order to prevent ESD, we need to layout an ESD mat that grounds your computer to yourself. This mat works by preventing any static charge that our hands pick up when installing components, so we don’t fry anything on the motherboard or any of our components. One end is wrapped around your wrist, the other is clipped to the computer’s case with a metal clip so that if there is electric static discharge, it will be let out through the case’s metal preventing any electricity to damage ourselves or the components. Now that the proper measures have been taken, we can now install the motherboard and the processor. In order to install our motherboard, we need to lay our computers case on its side, right side up and identify the 9 standoffs in our computer’s case. The case that I chose was the Lian Li O11 Dynamic. The motherboard to be installed is the ASUS TUF X570 PLUS (WIFI). We now will place the motherboard inside of the case on top of the standoff slots, so that our screw holes on the motherboard align with the standoff slots. We know our motherboard is installed the correct way and right side up, when our RAM (random access memory) slots are on the right of the motherboard and our processor’s power cable jack is in the top left. Now just simply screw in the screws into each hole until our motherboard is firmly mounted. A last step to take in the
installation of our motherboard is to install the front panel connections of the motherboard in order to sync the power button of our case to the motherboard when we go to turn on the computer, we can find these case connections to the motherboard in our motherboard’s manual. After successfully installing the motherboard into the standoffs of our case, we can now install our processor. The processor to be installed is the AMD Ryzen 7 3700x CPU (Central Processing Unit). We will first open the CPU socket latch in the middle of the motherboard until the latch is fully lifted. We then need to find the arrow on the CPU chip and match it with the corresponding arrow on the motherboard socket so that the arrows are identical. After the arrows are aligned, we then will simply place the CPU into the socket until it falls into place gently. If the CPU doesn’t fit gently into the socket, take extra care to make sure that the CPU is properly lined up with the socket to avoid damaging the CPU or the CPU socket. The CPU should fit into place if done correctly. You then must grab the motherboard socket latch that was lifted earlier and lock the latch down into place so that the CPU is secured into the socket. The final step of installing the processor is to apply a thermal compound onto the CPU in order to allow for proper dissemination of airflow to our processor from our CPU cooler. The thermal paste acts as a conductor to bridge the gap of space between the CPU cooler and the CPU itself. Now that the motherboard and processor are installed correctly, it is now time to install the RAM sticks and CPU cooler in our computer. Every computer needs a cooler for the CPU, because the CPU runs very hot when executing tasks and without a cooler, the CPU would fry resulting in component failure. The CPU cooler I will be installing is the Corsair H100i Pro 240mm AIO (All in One). To install the CPU cooler, place the AIO directly on top of the CPU with thermal paste and push down firmly while screwing in the latches to the AIO mount on the motherboard, then install the USB cable to the USB 3.0 header on the motherboard along with

the fan header into a fan header slot of the motherboard. Once this is done the CPU cooler should turn on and properly cool your processor. To install the RAM, it is very simple. I will be using the Corsair Vengeance RGB PRO 4x8gb 3200Mhz RAM. There are 4 slots on the motherboard to the right labeled DDR4. This means that these four slots are for 4 th generation RAM sticks to be configured in either dual channel mode or quad channel mode. Since I have 4, I will be configuring this motherboard to operate with 4 channels of ram (quad channel). Simply lift the top latch of all 4 ram sticks and push each ram stick down firmly until the latch closes on the top notch of the ram stick. The RAM stick should not move, and it should be firmly planted inside of the slot. If the back of the RAM stick still moves, then it was installed improperly. Remove the ram stick and flip it around, it should now install correctly. We have now installed the RAM sticks and the CPU cooler, now it is time to install our graphics card and our hard drives. For our graphics card, I will be installing the ASUS TUF RTX 3080 GPU (graphics processing unit). This graphics card will be installed by two parts. The First part is to lift the latch on our PCIE x16 slot of our motherboard. Once this latch has been lifted it will allow the GPU to slide into the slot and then the latch will lock down onto the graphics card. Then you must install 2 screws into the graphics card’s mounting bracket to mount the GPU to the frame of the case to allow the graphics card to be secured correctly. Once both steps are completed, the GPU is ready to go. For the hard drives, they are also very simple. Each case should come with some sort of drive bay to house our storage components. The storage components I will be installing is the Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD (hard disk drive), Samsung 860 EVO 500gb SSD (solid state drive) , and the ASUS 24x DVD (digital versatile disk) drive. All three of these drives can be installed very simply. There are 3 drive bay slots, each slot will have 4 screw holes, simply screw each hard drive into the drive bay slot and that is it! If all 4
screws were installed to each respective hard drive and its drive bay slot, then the hard drives have been installed correctly. Finally, now that all our components are installed, it is now time to install the power supply. The power supply that I will be installing is the Corsair RMX 850 80w Gold modular power supply. This power supply will provide enough wattage for every single component along with the proper cabling that we will need. The first cable to be installed, is our 24-pin ATX motherboard connector. This connector is what provides all the power to our motherboard. We will find the big jack on the right side of our motherboard and simply connect the 24-pin cable to the motherboard slot. The second cable to be installed is our CPU power cable, this cable will provide power to our CPU through the CPU power slot on our motherboard. This connector is a 6 pin PCIE connector. I will then find one of the three PCIE cables from the power supply and then plug it into the CPU power slot to give the CPU power. Finally, we need to install the PCIE connectors to our GPU. This RTX 3080 GPU requires at least 2 6+2 pin PCIE connectors. I will then plug in the 2 remaining PCIE connectors to the GPU to power on the GPU. Finally, the last bit of cables to be installed are the SATA (serial advanced technology treatment) power cables to each of our Storage devices (HDD, SSD, and optical disk drive) to power them on. One last thing to consider when putting the computer together is to make sure to have enough fans installed into the case to keep it cool. The fans can be installed by mounting the fan to the case using 4 screws and then plugging in the fan cable to a fan header labeled on the motherboard. Now that all of our components are installed we can now connect a keyboard, mouse, and monitor, and power on our computer.
