Diversion programs are alternative sentencing that aim to divert certain offenders from the traditional criminal justice system. These programs are designed to provide non-punitive alternatives to incarceration or other conventional forms of punishment, such as probation or community service. The goal of diversion programs is to address the root causes of criminal behavior, such as substance abuse or mental health issues, through counseling, education, and other rehabilitation services. The ultimate objective is to reduce recidivism rates and promote public safety while providing offenders with the resources to turn their lives around. Programs Avenue for Justice The Avenue for Justice (AFJ) program is a critical initiative in New York City that aims to prevent juveniles from becoming entangled in the criminal justice system. The program offers young people diverse opportunities for success while also ensuring they avoid legal issues. By prioritizing this goal, the program strives to create a safer and more equitable society for all. The AFJ program serves males and females aged 13 to 24, and while they serve all races and ages, they seem to primarily assist African Americans between 16 and 18 years old. They have three types of programs that help the youth. We provide court advocacy services for ATI and re-entry participants, conveniently located within a Manhattan courthouse. Our location enables us to offer expedited access to offenders and to stand alongside them during their hearings. We remain committed to advocating for them in court until they achieve a favorable outcome.
Hire up – The program provides an array of educational opportunities to assist young individuals in achieving success in society. With a 24/7 mentoring program, they offer a range of other programs, including communications, job readiness, financial literacy, and mental health workshops, among others. Short assistance and referrals – most families in the program are from low income so they offer them four websites with services. This program offers significant advantages as it guides young individuals towards a new and positive direction in life. It provides them with opportunities to expand their knowledge in various areas and offers support for their mental well-being, including learning effective ways to manage feelings of anger, depression, and anxiety. The AFJ has a positive impact on the juveniles they assist. Their success rate of 93% shows that the program is effective in preventing reoffending. I strongly believe that their program is well-designed and it's working efficiently. My reason for this is to help them achieve their goals and lead a crime-free life. My Brother’s Keeper The My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Diversion Program is a community-based initiative that provides an alternative to the traditional criminal justice system for young men of color who are at risk of being incarcerated. Through mentorship, education, and job training services, the program focuses on addressing the root causes of criminal behavior, such as poverty, lack of education, and limited opportunities. There are various locations for this program the one that I located first was in Texas. The MBK Diversion Program is specifically designed for young men of color between the ages of 18 and 24 who are facing low-level, non-violent charges. The program offers various services,

including case management, educational and vocational training, mental health counseling, and substance abuse treatment. The program's goal is to provide these young men with the resources and support they need to turn their lives around and avoid future involvement with the criminal justice system. By providing them with access to education, job training, and other resources, the MBK Diversion Program aims to break the cycle of poverty and incarceration that has affected so many young men of color in our communities. Overall, the MBK Diversion Program is a valuable resource for young men of color facing legal issues. By providing them with an alternative to incarceration and addressing the root causes of their criminal behavior, the program is helping to create safer and more equitable communities for everyone. I believe the program is effective. Young men, especially those of color, have a higher likelihood of being incarcerated both as juveniles and adults.
