Running head: LAPTOP PARTS UPGRADE AND REPLACEMENT 1 Laptop Parts Upgrade and Replacement Daniel Bevan Bellevue University BSIT200 October 28 th 2019
LAPTOP PARTS UPGRADE AND REPLACEMENT 2 Laptop Parts Upgrade and Replacement The laptop computer that needs repair is the ASUS VivoBook F510QA that is available on Amazon.com for $349.99 (Amazon.com, 2019). The client managed to drop the laptop while it was powered on and now it won’t boot up. They have asked for a quote to replace potentially damaged parts. Cost of Parts There are specifications available on the manufacturer’s website, so we have a good list of the existing components. Motherboard/Processor The motherboard & processor are some of the most expensive components to replace in the laptop and is not interchangeable with that of other laptops. The least expensive one found was used and costs $184.99 on ebay (ebay.com, 2019). These are not readily available elsewhere and replacement would involve the complete disassembly of the entire laptop. If the motherboard or processor is bad, it is likely more cost effective to replace the entire machine. Monitor The monitor is also quite expensive to replace, but it often a lot easier to switch out than a motherboard. According to the ASUS parts website, a replacement 15.6" (16:9) FHD (1920x1080) 60Hz Anti-Glare Panel 45% NTSC with wide 178° viewing angles is $229 (asus- accessories.com, 2019).
LAPTOP PARTS UPGRADE AND REPLACEMENT 3 Power Supply (External) The power supply for this device is only $12.99 for an aftermarket generic version that delivers a 19v output between 33 and 45 watts (chargerbuy.com, 2019). The remaining components are much easier to replace, and upgrades could even be made to further improve the performance of the device. RAM (Memory) The motherboard is compatible with 2400Mhz DDR4 PC4-19200 Non- ECC SODIMM RAM. The laptop currently has 8GB of RAM but can take up to 16GB on two SODIMM’s. The upgrade cost per stick of memory is $54.99 (Newegg.com, 2019). SSD (Storage Drive) The storage drive is a solid-state drive that is a stick type drive. The tech specs are that it uses a M.2 2280 size drive with a PCIe interface. An exact size replacement can be found for as little as $39.99 for a 256GB (Newegg.com, 2019). An upgrade up to 1TB would be $199.99 and 2TB would be $399 (Newegg.com, 2019). Installation of Parts As mentioned earlier, if the replacement of the motherboard or processor is needed, the entire device would need to completely disassembled with the exception of the monitor, which will only need to be detached. The remainder of the parts can be installed via the base of the device. The only tool needed here is a Philips screwdriver. The first step is to completely power off the device. Then we will need to take out all the screws from the base of the housing as there are not access ports on the laptop. A lot of the screws are visible, but there are also screws underneath the rubber feet

LAPTOP PARTS UPGRADE AND REPLACEMENT 4 on the underside. Remove the two rubber feet at the front of the laptop (that are glued on) and remove those screws also. Once inside, all the remaining components can be switched out from here. With the laptop flat on the table and upside down, the SSD is in the top right corner of the motherboard. Slide out the existing SSD and replace it. The RAM interface is on the same side as the SSD but a few inches lower on the motherboard, and a few inches closer to the center of the board. There are two memory slots, each one can hold an 8GB SODIMM of memory. The are metal clips on each side of the memory stick that hold it in place. Gently pull them back, one at a time, to release the stick of RAM. The new memory can now be installed. It will only fit one way, so ensure that the notch on the bottom edge of the memory stick lines up with that of the interface port. To replace the screen, the old screen will need to be completely removed. On the lower bottom corners, there is a sticker on each corner, covering the screw. The tools needed for this job are a Philips screwdriver and a pry tool. Once the screws are removed, slowly work the pry tool around the outside edge of the housing frame (bezel) that surrounds the screen. There are four more screws to remove here. The screen will now be loose. Be careful of the connectors and gently lay the old screen down. Remove the connector from the middle of the old screen at the base, it is a simple push on connecter, with tape over it, that should come off easily. Now connect the new screen. Turn on the laptop to ensure the screen is connected correctly. Turn off the laptop and reattach the screws, the bezel, and the bezel screws.
