The topic that I am choosing is Mental health issues, mainly focusing on ADHD and anxiety. This topic is close to me because my daughter has severe ADHD and is now suffering from anxiety as well. I also suffer from anxiety, and this topic is important to me to research. When I was growing up, I knew nothing about ADHD or anxiety until I was older. I thought something was wrong with me because I would always get scared or nervous having to talk in class or even give a presentation when other kids didn’t have that problem. It was hard on me because I was so scared and shy that other kids made fun of me. Now, with my daughter having to deal with similar things, her ADHD is under control, but her anxiety is getting worse. History lens Many cultures have viewed mental health as punishment and a demonic possession. There are supernatural theories about mental illness being possessed by spirits, gods, curses, or sin (Farreras, 2023). Examinations of prehistoric skulls found holes drilled in the head around 6500 B.C. They were trained to treat epilepsy and thought that if holes were drilled, the spirits inside could be released. There is something called Mental Health America, and it was founded in 1909 by Clifford Beers. He wanted to make this movement because he was in and out of institutions and saw what it did to people. He tried to promote mental health and prevent mental illness through advocacy, education, and more. Humanities lens The humanities reminded me of the truth in the subject and the objective. Some truths promote empathy, understanding, and growth. These are some of the qualities that make psychiatry and help with mental illness so important. The humanities are necessary to help doctors treat their patients who have mental health problems like ADHD and anxiety. It helps them connect to their
patients and helps them trust the doctor to do what needs to be done. When it comes to mental health and different cultures, this can play a significant role in it. Our beliefs and values form mental health and the way we understand and cope with mental illness. This can also affect how someone will seek help and accept the help they need. Natural and Applied Science lens There have been so many different and new ways to treat and diagnose mental illness. By looking at mental health through the natural and applied science lens, it reveals that there are more questions on how mental disorders develop. ADHD is genetic; it is the genes you get from your parents that play a good factor in it. If one of the parents has ADHD or a sibling goes, then you are most likely going to get this disorder. Most mental health issues come with many risk factors. Some of the factors could be environmental, genetic, and abuse of drugs and alcohol. With ADHD, it is mainly found in boys rather than girls. There are many times girls go undiagnosed. There are a couple of signs to look out for inattentive and over-hyperactivity. Mental health disorders can cause an increased risk for chronic physical health. People who have not-so-good mental health can be at risk for diabetes, heart disease, and respiratory disease. (Crump, 2022). There are a couple of things that make looking at this objectively and being able to diagnose a mental illness and it being the right one because some disorders mock each other. If you can analyze a mental health issue, you are doing great! Social Science lens Social scientists study the interplay among social, cultural, economic, and historical forces that shape the experiences of illness, including mental health. This lens has the understanding that someone’s mental health could be at risk and also that their well-being is at risk. Mental illness

does not matter who you are; it can come after anyone. It can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, income, religion, or ethnicity. This can happen at any age, but it can begin close to 24. (Njoku, 2022). Some children already have some mental illnesses, but they cannot help because they were born with them. This will affect some of your relationships because some people might not want to be around you because of your illness. They might get scared because of the stigma that goes with mental illness. There needs to be communication when it comes to any relationship; if they know you have it, they might be like so do I; let's be friends. The social structure and systems of mental illness could be the fact that you are treated the same as someone who does not have a mental illness. There are three different stigmas about mental illness: self- stigma, public stigma, and institutional stigma.
