Chapter 7 Learning Outcomes October 18, 2022 LO 21-1 What is thinking?
Thinking is a higher mental process, it is the way individuals know and understand the world, make decisions, judgements, and process information. Thinking is a manipulation of one's mental representations of information. Thinking is a process where the mind attaches existing information to introduced information to have a better understanding of it. LO 21-2 What processes underlie decision making? The processes that underlie decision making are the use of algorithms and heuristics. Algorithms are the applications that lead to a guaranteed solution and heuristics are using bits of memory to generate a solution that may not be guaranteed. LO 21-3 How do people approach and solve problems? People approach and solve problems in a three-stage approach: preparation, production of solutions, and then evaluation. The first stage of the approach, preparation, is setting the problem into one of three locations, either arrangement, structure, or transformation. Each location deals with either the rearrangement of elements so it can be judged, structuring, and connecting different existing information, and transforming first circumstances into a goal state. The production stage's purpose is to create solutions for the given problem, some already existing memories can be used to get the solution. People's approach to solving problems is like math equations, there is a specific equation that leads to the answer for the given variables. LO 21-4 What are the major obstacles to problem solving? Major obstacles to problem solving: a person's mental set, inefficient use of algorithms, confirmation bias, and creativity. Obstacles attached to problem solving tend to be individual based meaning that these hurdles differ between each person with their abilities and processes of problem solving. My comparison of the processes of problem solving and different math equations can be tied to this situation where each person has their own obstacles when facing problem solving. The person may just simply not have the “equation” to solve that problem they are facing. LO 22-1 How do people use language? People use language to communicate information between each other by using symbols attached to guidelines of systematic rules. Each language has its own different symbols that are connected to their own idea of rules such as grammar that is guidelines of how to correctly use that language. LO 22-2 How does language develop? Language develops after gaining language comprehension, language is first understood then used. Theorists claim that language is learnt through conditioning and reinforcement. Environment and genetic circumstances help the teaching of language. LO 23-1 What are the different definitions and conceptions of intelligence? Intelligence can have multiple ways that it can be defined and has different conceptions. Some of the many ideas of what intelligence are one's mental capacity for understanding the world or
one's mental ability. The amount of intelligence one has could be related to their overall success in life. LO 23-2 What are the major approaches to measuring intelligence, and what do intelligence tests measure? Major approaches for measuring intelligence are through given tests. Lists of tests that measure intelligence: Stanford-Binet, Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-IV, and Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children V tests. Intelligence tests tend to compare mental age to chronological age to produce a score. All the tests are expected to be reliable, consistent, and to measure the circumstances the tests were made to figure out. LO 23-3 How can the extremes of intelligence be characterized? The extremes of intelligence can be characterized by intellectual disabilities and intellectually gifted. Disabilities can be differentiated between mild, moderate, and severe intellect and the gifted are people with IQ scores of above 130. LO 23-4 Are traditional IQ tests culturally biased? Traditional intelligence quotient tests do tend to be culturally biased. People tend to believe that the tests are biased and in favor of the middle-class, white population. This could have come to be because each group of population has a different idea and specialization of intelligence. Culturally fair tests have been made to attempt to solve this problem and other test avoid questions that can be aided by a particular cultural background. LO 23-5 To what degree is intelligence influenced by the environment and to what degree by heredity? The degree that intelligence is influenced by either environment or heredity has been claimed to be extremely misleading and has lacked beneficial insight. Group test scores have an extreme variation when compared to individual scores.
