Navigating through change occurs often in either our personal or professional lives. A change I have recently experienced is a professional change. I was promoted six months ago, and I am actually in the process of going through another promotion within the company I work at as they received contracts to open up in larger retailers. This means that I am working hard in my current role while making preparations to adjust into a new role, because the company is making this change quickly and quietly. This has been a fast-paced change with long-term goals. Throughout this interview and promotion process, there have been experienced similarities that Cradle et al. (2014) discusses when mentioning how to maximize the chance of successfully implementing change as I am still waiting on an answer involving my professional change. After taking the change readiness assessment, it was concluded that my change characteristics include resourcefulness, adaptability, optimism, confidence, adventurousness, tolerance for ambiguity, and passion/drive. “The world is changing faster than ever, and we have to learn to adjust” (Edge Training Systems, 2007). Change can be uncertain, but there are steps to take to overcome change. The video discusses two steps into changes. Those steps are to understand the change and to identify benefits and opportunities. The first step implies to learn everything you can up front about everything that is going to happen. In my experience, I kept an open communication with my manager and my senior manager to discuss expectations, dates, timelines, and purposes. That gave me a clear understanding to still be able to manage my current role and integrating my new role. During this step I am using my resourcefulness and optimism change readiness characteristic because I am using my
immediate and available resources to communicate with and having a realistic viewpoint to continue moving in a positive way, even if it is stressful. In this second step presented by the video, I worked through this change by creating a visual of the benefits and opportunities this promotion and direction the company is moving towards has on my future. The good outweighed the bad giving me the confidence, adventure, and passion needed to be successful during this change. Visually seeing and speaking about the benefits and opportunities gave me the confidence to handle every situation I am presented with as I am focusing on the needs of the business, others, and myself. Change can be uncomfortable and scary, but I have found ways to maneuver through any obstacles and will continue to adapt the change until I am fully transitioned into my new role, managing my own team.
