Topic: Student multitasking in the classroom Reference: Digital Tools and Distraction in School In the article, Digital Tools and Distraction in School , it discusses the benefits of technology in the classroom such as Chromebooks and smartphones. However, with technology now becoming an everyday necessity in the classroom comes the difficulty of having students stay on task with having internet access at their fingertips. The article goes on to talk about removing distractions such as technology can be an extreme cause, some students can report that they learn better without. There needs to be a discussion not only with the student(s) but also with the guardians as to how the internet is being used, how it plays a role in their social lives, and what the parents can do to set an example for their child(ren). Following that is the discussion of self regulation, it goes on to say that students need to learn how to multitask while getting their work completed. Examples of this being the student can listen to music or watch a YouTube video while completing homework as long as it does not interfere with the task. If the phone becomes too much of a distraction the student should then understand that shutting the phone off or putting it in another room would benefit them more to complete what needs to be done. Later on in the article it is mentioned that this educator specifically will have her students look up from their screen as a way to get their attention along with building a routine that they should not be facing their screen at the time of instruction or demonstrations. Lastly, the article finished off by saying that the internet and technology will be going nowhere anytime soon. With that being said it is better to teach student(s) the importance of multitasking and managing screen time.
