1 Unit VII Project Identifying CRR Benchmarks Joseph Lefebre Columbia Southern University Course Number FIR 3307 Instructor: Daniel Gaumont February 27, 2024
Identifying CRR Benchmarks 2 Timeline of Reviews o An annual review will be conducted of the number of vacant home fires in Fort Myers o Fire Prevention will compare the number of vacant home fires to the previous year as a benchmark o Fire Inspector division will be in charge of analyzing the data, it will be reviewed by the Fire Marshal o If benchmarks are not met during the annual review the CRR will be reassessed and adjusted o Plan holders and evaluators will meet every 6 months to evaluate the plan o If changes are necessary, they will be made at the 6-month evaluation and the changes will be communicated to all team members o Modifications to the plan will be evaluated based on the results of whether the vacant home fires have increased or decreased between meetings
Identifying CRR Benchmarks 3 For a Community Risk Reduction Plan (CRR) to be successful, it must be a plan that can be adjusted when needed. A CRR can be as unique as the community that it was made for. In order to reduce the number of vacant home fires in a community, the community must buy-in to the idea of wanting to fix the problem. The community members have to be able to see the why and the how. It must be clearly communicated to the community members why the vacant home fires have increased in the last two years, and how as a community we can come together to fix the problem. The community members will be relying on the local fire department, police department as well as the leadership of the city to fix the problem. A well planned CRR will have clear benchmarks that can be evaluated at specifics times throughout the year to know if it working. Changes often have to be made to a CRR in order to achieve the expected results of the community and the expectations of all team members involved. Expectations should be made clear in the beginning stages of the CRR. If the results that were expected are not being met then adjustments should be made and a clear plan of how to implement those changes should be clearly communicated to all members involved. An increase in vacant home fires in a specific community may seem like a problem that can be simply rectified by increases in police patrolling and literature being sent to homes in the neighborhoods, but fixing the underlying problem can be a greater task. The underlying problem has more to do with the economy and the rising home and rent prices, this has led to a greater homeless population in our city. The lack of homeless shelters and outreach resources can be a task that that takes much more time and resources to fix. This can often be a problem that takes many years to solve.
