Nuntivacharind 1 4-2 Journal: DHS Leadership Nuntivacharind, M SNHU 2 FEB 2024 Instructor William Geimano
Nuntivacharind 2 Until the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, both state and local law enforcement within the United States operated within their own jurisdictions. Each department was conducted separately, and none of the departments received assistance from other agencies, such as criminal investigations, patrols, search and rescue, order maintenance, and crime lab analysis. “Prior to the formation of the modern homeland security environment, the all-encompassing mission of police agencies was to serve in a law enforcement capacity and had few resources to prepare for and respond to domestic security emergencies.” (Department of Homeland Security n.d.). The creation of the homeland security department resulted in both state and local police becoming part of the frontline for internal security missions and civil defense operations. After 9/11, the DHS became the main agency responsible for counterterrorism. Department of Homeland Security secretary is responsible for overseeing efforts to combat terrorism and enhance security, securing and managing our borders while facilitating trade and travel, enforcing immigration laws, securing cyberspace, preparing for disasters, and providing essential support for national and economic security, coordinated with Federal, state, local, international, and private sector partners. In addition to holding cabinet-level authority, the Secretary of Homeland Security oversees all matters related to homeland security. Currently, the secretary of homeland security is Alejandro Mayorkas (Department of Homeland Security, n.d.) Because of 9/11, the leadership of the Department of Homeland Security played a critical role in the counterterrorism effort. The organization was created not only to help prevent future terrorist attacks, but also to facilitate collaboration among various agencies. Together, these unified organizations are working toward enhancing homeland security.
