Since you live in the 21st century, you will likely encounter the internet of things (IoT) in your daily life. For example, if you use a badge to sign in to your office at work, you are engaging with IoT. If you have purchased Amazon's Alexa for your home, you are engaging with IoT. You may even be using the IoT more often than you realize, depending on how much technology you use. As you learned in this module, these technologies are pervasive as they interact with the internet and other devices and in various aspects of our lives. Reflect on the IoT you engage with frequently for this week's discussion post. For your initial post: Identify three examples of the internet of things that you engage with (or would like to hire with) frequently Describe how you use (or would use) these technologies Discuss the positive and negative aspects of the pervasive nature of the IoT you identified In your responses to your peers' discussion posts: Determine whether you use the same technologies that your peers discussed or have never heard of those IoT technologies Discuss whether you agree or disagree with your peers' ideas on the positive and negative aspects of IoT pervasiveness To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric document.
As everyone in this class knows, IoT is all around us. Some of us older folks have watched technology evolve from the in-home personal computer of the Commodore 64, gaming consoles, and phones that were rotary and hung on the wall to smart homes, phones in a watch, and computers that are also phones. The possibilities are endless. I remember my parents telling me that the government could be listening to our phone conversations, and we had to watch what we say, to smart homes that listen to conversations so that requests can be made to function the home. I chuckle when I think about my adolescence. For this discussion post, the three examples of IoT I use daily are the Amazon Fire Cube, the Apple Watch, and the Verkada Pass. My fire cube connects to my TV to stream my television channel preferences. I can say, "Alexa, turn up the volume," or "Alexa, pause," and the fire cube instantly responds. The positive aspect is the customer service received without needing a remote. The negative is that the system is listening and sometimes does not get the request correctly, leaving room for errors. The Apple Watch connects to my wrist and completes simple tasks such as step counting, movement, and telling time up to complex tasks such as phone calls, text messages, and heart rate during workouts. The positive is, again, customer service with instant requests. The negative is also the same as that of the cube. Unfortunately, apps hear about conversations and then have ads showing the items discussed within the discussions without searching for the items. Verkada is used to control doors, camera systems, and environmental sensors. Verkada pass works through my smartphone. I use it every day throughout my employment. As the administrator of the application, I can open and lock down both individual and the complete locking system, I can view all cameras on the campus, I can check the environmental sensor to see if foreign substances are being used, such as vaping, and my favorite-I can alert the police and send them a personal link in the event of a catastrophe such as a school shooting. Before the officers arrive on the scene, they gain control of cameras with a live, instant view of the campus inside and out so that the perpetrator can be found with a detailed description of the suspect saving countless moments and lives. There are so many advantages to the Verkada pass, with the first being safety. The negative is that the phone or keyfob is required to enter any of the doors, and computer access or the phone for administrative access, especially when a crisis involves a split-second decision.
In your responses to your peers' discussion posts: Determine whether you use the same technologies that your peers discussed or have never heard of those IoT technologies Discuss whether you agree or disagree with your peers' ideas on the positive and negative aspects of IoT pervasiveness
