Aarica Brittany SCS 285 Research Literacy in Social Sciences Patrick McManimon November 18, 2023 4-1: Milestone Two With the research I have conducted so far, I have found several different sources using qualitative and quantitative methodologies along with mixed methods. Some of the articles I found to use for the qualitative method include titles such as Caregiver Involvement in Behavioral Health Services in the Context of Child Welfare Service Referrals: A Qualitative Study and for the quantitative method, I found the article Identifying and Addressing Parental Trauma and Behavioral Health Need: The Role of the Child Welfare System. However, my research includes mixed methods. I found the article Retention in a Parenting Intervention Among Parents Involved with the Child Welfare System which provided a great deal of information that could be utilized in different ways. When you use this form of study, you get a better understanding of the subject and can use it as a tool for the future of the same subject.
Some of the most important data that is collected uses some very useful and helpful techniques that include studies with a mixed-method approach to examine psychological factors associated with retention among the population. (McWey, 2015) Psychology could be a useful way to gain perspective on the matters of using internal thoughts that use qualitative data. Using this way of collection in Social Sciences would be helpful in physiological cases that have a lot of layers to them and that come off as a more intense method, needing most research done, which would benefit from the use of quantitative data as well. Using both quantitative and qualitative data for a better analysis, researchers were able to measure parenting practices, parental mental health was covered, and perceptions of child behavioral problems were examined. In this field of study, I see the use of participant observation combined with data analysis is the most successful. I think this is used because it allows for a wider range of data to be collected using multiple and different sources. I find that interviews can be used to get a better insight into the information needed by getting personal experiences from people regarding the research topic. I also find that surveys are a big part of services that are used in social sciences because they save money by being cost-efficient while gathering a lot of information promptly from different people. With the use of different forms of data collection, the only downfall is the lack of credibility that may occur because of bias. This is a big factor when it comes to surveys or interviews because they can be crafted a certain way under limited direction. When you use multiple data collection formats, this can be not only extremely helpful, but you can also form more facts that could be used as evidence or to show proof of credibility. However, there can be drawbacks when you use multiple data-collection types because
sometimes the information collected is affected when situations turn out to be wrong. Sometimes the wrong information negatively affects the credibility of the source, which can cause bias, and also take up too much time, causing great cost. Using multiple data-collection types with any study allows the person doing the research researcher to gain a better understanding because the numerous types of data give a better of what information is needed, just because the use of surveys or interviews involved makes the process clearer. It can be a helpful and useful tool when you need to gather a large range of information because focusing on just one type of data is as relevant and may not be useful. Like everything else, because nothing is perfect, there can come a disadvantage when you use multiple data collection types, which makes things less complex and maybe not as easy for others. The more types of data collection tools used can add more resources and time and may cost you more in the end. In social sciences, the collection methods often used are interviews and surveys and this can give more time to those performing the tasks to gather the information they need that is more beneficial to them than they can use. When you must gather a great amount of data quickly at a low cost and use smaller amounts of data, this can be more time-consuming and require an in-depth detailed manner. This is why, in the end, whatever best fits the needs of the researcher when it comes to Social Sciences is the method that will be used the most. References Pérez Jolles, M., Flick, J. A.
