Golden 1 Shayna Golden Daniels ENC1101 November 12,2023 Becoming A Better Student "Amor fati" is a Latin phrase that translates to "love or fate." It is often used to describe an attitude in which one accepts everything that happens in their life, including suffering and loss, as good. This mindset involves accepting the events and situations that occur throughout one's life. Growing up, I was always a below-average student. Educators around me would tell me that I had so much potential, but I never understood what they meant until my senior year of high school. My guidance counselor finally made it clear to me that I wouldn't be graduating with my class. In that moment, all 12 years of school flashed before my eyes and disappointment was the only feeling I had. However, this didn't stop me from trying to reach my full potential. I knew that if I didn't start then, when would I? Becoming a disciplined student was not easy, especially considering my learning disability. As someone who struggles with ADHD, it was difficult for me to keep up with my peers and it often discouraged me. I eventually realized that I was using my disability as an excuse every time I felt like I was slacking off. I had to stop justifying this cycle and make a change. I didn't like where I was at that point, so I decided to change it. Constantly feeling sorry for myself was not the solution to becoming a successful student. Instead, I forced myself out of my comfort zone, stayed consistent with my goals, and remained motivated even when I didn't feel like it. In psychology, there is a principle known as the mere exposure effect. This refers to the finding that individuals tend to prefer or like things that they are familiar with. This was easy for me to understand, but the hard part was forgetting what I was comfortable with, which
Golden 2 was slacking off. The mere exposure effect helped me put in extra work that I would usually avoid, and I learned to make that my new normal. After applying this first step, I managed to get all A's and B's in the first quarter of the school year, something that hadn't happened since third grade. It was then that I finally understood what my past educators meant about my potential. Despite my learning disability, I had the potential to succeed. I just needed to adapt to my disability instead of working against it. This was not easy, nor was it comfortable, but I knew that progress was being made. By the first quarter of my senior year, I was already seeing improvement in my grades and my mindset. However, I made the mistake of getting comfortable again. Just because my situation had become easier with the effort I put in, I forgot to stay consistent with my goals. When the second quarter grades came out, it was obvious that I hadn't performed as well as I did in the first quarter. I believe there are two reasons for this; I got comfortable again and kept consistent with my goals. In the third quarter, I did my best to stay away from my comfort zone. Most importantly,I stayed consistent with my goal of becoming a better student which led me to receive all A’s except for one C+. Although I was disappointed in the C+, I knew I could do better. The class that I received a C+ in was no surprise it was mathematics, a subject that I had convinced myself I was doomed to. I remember explaining to my tutor how hopeless I felt, even though I had tried my hardest and still received a C. The disappointment was a major factor in my lack of motivation. My tutor then explained the growth mindset to me. Growth mindset is the belief that challenges and setbacks are opportunities to learn and improve skills. After studying this concept, I applied it to my journey towards success. By fourth quarter, I had made all A’s, including in math. I never thought I could become good at this subject, but
Golden 3 by using the steps and strategies that I had to learn to love, I was able to adapt to my disability and become a successful student. This may not be the same recipe for success for everyone, but I strongly encourage incorporating growth mindset principles into your daily routine to find your path to a successful education.
