GG102OC Wilfrid Laurier University LAB ASSIGNMENT 9: FIELD NOTES TABLE – DOWNTOWN KITCHENER Locale Building Name Current Function(s) (What is it used for? Do a quick Google search if needed.) Re-urbanization Type A, B and/or C HINT: only 2 locales have 2 types 2 Observations (Comment on age, façade, the type and look, windows, engravings, parking, etc., – record any 2 observations you see that support the type you chose !) Example Only McDonald Lofts Loft/condo living which appear to be mixed-use (grocery, video store and hair salon on main level and residential on top floors). Type B Alongside of building in large script letters is “McDonald Tire Company Limited” (indicating the building had a previous use or life) The outside bricks are red but look very tired and worn (give an example of why they look worn) indicating an older style of building #1 Hint: This location has only 1 main type of re- urbanization occurring here. Remember “new- wave piggybacking” must significantly increase the usable square footage of a space. It is not true “new-wave piggybacking” if an added structure is used to simply increase natural lighting. Deloitte Deloitte is a company that provides risk advisory, audit and assurance, consulting, as well as any tax related services. Type B - The building’s exterior has a washed out look, this could be from the sun or just from the bricking aging. There is also a structure in the parking lot that resembles a tower, the tower looks like it has aged quite a bit which could indicate that the building was built a long time ago and is historical. - Besides the historical tower in the parking lot, the parking lot looks newer and looks as if it has been renovated. 1
GG102OC Wilfrid Laurier University #2 Hint: This building takes up an entire large square block of land. Its current function is best seen and can be summed up from standing at the corner of Charles St. W./ Victoria St. S. Lang Tannery Company Building Used for commercial purposes. Includes offices for companies such as Google and D2L. Type B - Apart from a small new entry with glass windows on the side near coffee shop at the end of the right side, the building's outside looks to be original, and not many renovations have been made. - Looks as if the building was bought by someone and turned into a space for offices, the sign on the building that says “The Lang Tanning Company Limited” indicates that the building was originally used by someone else before being bought and turned into a space for offices, retailers, and restaurants. #3 Hint: The building name (which is the same as its address) does not describe this location’s overall use, but it is very evident what is going on here when you look at the ground level and then upward. 1 Victoria Apartment complex with come commercial space at the bottom. Type C - The building looks newly built and has a very modern look, the construction at the bottom of the building could indicate that it could still be under construction. - The building is quite big and looks as if it has a lot of parking spaces for the residents. #4 Building owed by the 2
GG102OC Wilfrid Laurier University Hint: This conjoined site (two separate buildings with same use) is best identified while standing on the corner of Victoria St. S. and Charles St. W. Look to the building closest to King St. W. for the correct type. This location has only 1 main type of re- urbanization occurring here. UW School of Pharmacy University of Waterloo that is used for the faculty of Pharmacy. Type C - Close to public transportation which is convenient for students who commute or for students in general if they need to take public transport somewhere. - The building looks like a newer build and has a very modern look. The windows on the exterior give it a modern look and the bricks look like they are new condition. #5 Hint: You can walk closer to this building or simply observe it from afar standing on the corner of King and Victoria St. It should be obvious what the function of this building is, given the lab #5 prep readings and big c o l o u r f u l identifier on the outside of this building. The Breithaupt Block Office space property Type A & B - The building has an older look and seems to be owned by Google. The side that has the Google sign on it seems to be newly renovated and has a much more modern look compared to the rest of the building. - The bricks on the building are very washed out and look as if they have sun damage #6 - The bricks of the building give the building an older look, 3

GG102OC Wilfrid Laurier University Hint: This is a very large building that takes up an entire city block on King St. W (you may peek around the back of this large building to determine its current function). It is obvious when you circle around the entire building. Look closely at the top floors of this building. The Kaufman Lofts Apartment Building Type A & B but the big windows give the building a more modern look. - At the entrance located at King St. W there is a sign above the door saying, “Kaufman Foot ware”. This can indicate that the building has been repurposed as an apartment/ loft complex. 4
GG102OC Wilfrid Laurier University 1. Identify and explain which type of re-urbanization activity (A, B, or C) appears to be the most prevalent in downtown Kitchener and comment on why you think this one activity is the most frequent type. Make reference to the information in your table and any other background information you acquired to support your choice. After looking over the chart, type B or adaptive reuse seems. To be the most common in Downtown Kitchener. I think that this is the most prevalent type because older buildings should be preserved as much as possible in a way that shows the region's historical roots. It appears that no matter their age, developers in the Kitchener area tend to add new projects to older ones or preserve the present state. According to my chart and observations, the majority the buildings in the area were used for manufacturing or industrial purposes. The old businesses that used these buildings before played a significant role in the region's history. In my opinion, this prevents the town's buildings from all having the same look and is one of the best methods to maintain the town's heritage. 2. Identify and explain one reason why you think the current function of the six locations complement one another. In other words, what is it that makes these sites so integrated? What makes them work so well together for the benefit of all users in the Innovation District? One reason why the current function of the six locations complements one another is because they are all very close together which allows people to settle and work in the city. Personally, I would like to buy a home or an apartment in the city where I work, and I know that many others would do the same. With people buying homes close to their work in the city will help the city’s economy. Repurposing older buildings into apartments and lofts will also help draw people to the city as apartments with more of a rustic look are very popular, this will also help the city’s economy. 5
