Describe a recent cybercrime and what cybercrime theory you believe applies to this case. Please explain the reasons why the theory you picked applies. The existence of the internet and the risk of cybercrimes has evolved into a growing concern because the databases have evolved part of and have begun gathering details on them. Different people collect this data, which may be utilized to distinguish themselves. It is highly prone to exploitation because of its attributes. For instance, black hat hackers have heightened the dilemmas of countless organizations and authorities affecting the protection of their websites. In 2009, the process of threatening a nation-state's defense was via a terrorist or military invasion. Nevertheless, rising cyber-attacks have spurred worries about critical infrastructure safety. An Example of a vital energy infrastructure cyber-attack is the Imperial pipeline hack in May 2021. The cybercriminals, known as "The DarkSide," prevailed in penetrating utilizing a VPN account and setting a ransomware demand of $4.4 million (Iden,2021) against the Colonial Pipeline corporation. The ransom triggered a six-day lockdown on this pipeline, transporting diesel, jet fuel, gasoline, and other commodities between Texas and New Jersey (Eaton et al., 2021). This incident provoked panic throughout the East Coast of the United States, and the Department of Justice categorized these attacks as terrorism. The hypothesis behind this attack is a mix of a few beliefs. The first is about economic gain by putting ransomware on the intended network. This caused extortion to the corporation to deliver this ransom or forfeit entry to their web. The other theory was that this display was espionage. The cybercriminals were located in Russia, with the intensity of the COVID-19 pandemic. They seized the benefit of the circumstances and pushed the 5,500-mile-long pipeline out of commission (Gabbatt, 2021). This caused a destructive gas deficiency throughout the
eastern US. I agree with why the Department of Justice (DOJ) categorized this as a terrorist attack. We have become so reliant on gas as it can be the source that fuels an engine that drives a life support system.
