INT 225 Module 1 Discussion Post In your initial post, address the following as part of your response: List three products that you can purchase at a local store that are only available due to global trade, and discuss the impact of global trade on the local store. I think it’s difficult to list just three products since global trade is so pervasive in our every day world, we don’t even recognize the goods we are purchasing are a result of global trade. Three products I purchase on a regular basis and that is in my every day life are olive oil (Italy), avocados (Mexico), and my favorite cheese spread, Boursin. My grocery store, where I obtain all three of these, has an untold amount of imported food products as a result of global trade. If they didn’t carry these items, the selection and variety of foods I could shop for would be much less than what it is today. Additionally, if my local grocery store didn’t stock these items, then I would be forced to diversify in my shopping habits and spread my money across several stores in order to fulfill my tastes. For example, if the store didn’t carry Boursin cheese spread, I’d be forced to go to a specialty cheese store to see what they had in their inventory. Global trade has a big impact on my local store as it allows it to retain customers and their market share by offering a diverse range of products. List an occurrence (for example, an earthquake, hurricane, or war) that prevented a product from being sold in your local market or that affected the product's condition or price significantly. Discuss how frequently you notice missing products or significant price changes due to events in other countries. I think a lot of us can attest that the CV19 World Pandemic also had a profound effect on both the domestic and global grocery supply chain. An example of this is the scarcity of random items and the increase in pricing still with some of those items. One example that comes to mind is the canned soda market. Prior to the pandemic, you could find every flavor of canned soda that Pepsi or Coca-Cola produced in a 12 pack can case. Often, the price would be three for $10 or $12 dollars. Through the pandemic, you sometimes were lucky to find two flavors of soda in a 12 pack can case, and then sometimes not even then. The prices rose exponentially and has not lowered. Now, the price you pay for one 12 pack can case is upwards of $7 per unit. I feel fortunately when it’s a “buy 2 get 1 free” sale, and snatch up my diet cokes when I find those sales. In your responses to two or more of your peers, address the following: Which product are you most surprised is available only due to globalization, and why? After seeing examples of events that affected the availability of local products or services, what category of events do you think would affect the global supply chain most often, and why?
