EDUC 225 FINAL CLASS SUMMARY
TYPE YOUR ANSWERS DIRECTLY BELOW THE QUESTIONS! Questions should be in bold type and answers should be in regular type.
1.) You are asked to teach a lesson about simple machines to a group of third graders. What are some decisions that you will have to make in order to prepare and teach this lesson?
Answer: To teach a group of third graders I will make decisions about how to include various instructional strategies to tend to learning preferences and teach the concept beneficially. I will have to decide if I want to do more hands-on or more written work. In this case, I will decide to do a hands-on guided practice to make a simple machine in groups and go through different steps for doing. For independent practice I will have to decide if I want to do a more visual assignment or a written assignment. For simple machines, I would choose to either do a hands-
on cut and paste activity or a visual matching worksheet. All these activities would have to come with assistance for ELL and students with exceptionalities. During instruction I could choose to use a video to help student understanding, along with definitions and pictures. 2.)
Explain the meaning of a reflective practitioner in your own words. How is reflection important to achieve effective teaching?
Answer: A reflective practitioner is assuming teaching is for meeting goals within students. The teacher has a “the student will” mindset and are active and rational educators. Teachers are not afraid to try new things to meet the goals they have for students. 3.)
Describe the meaning of diversity. Refer to all
aspects of diversity as discussed in
class.
Answer: Diversity is how a group of people are all different and including everyone no matter the differences. Diversity includes race, gender, SES, religion, language, and exceptionalities. Students can come from various racial and SES backgrounds and students can have different views on religion and speak different languages. Also, classes will include boys and girls, so the
teacher should differentiate for both along with all other types of diversity.
4.)
Have your views on 1.) diversity and 2.) individual differences changed throughout the progress of this course? Yes or No… Why or why not? How will your views impact the way you plan to teach?
Answer: My views on diversity and individual differences have changed throughout this course
because I didn’t understand the depth of either one. My view on diversity has changed in the way that I understand how different situations and background affect worldview of students and
how they interact with peers. Diversity also affects how students learn concepts and think about what they are being taught. This will impact the way I plan to teach to make sure that I include opportunities for students to learn from each other’s diversity and teach in ways that everyone
can relate to understand. My view on individual differences have changed throughout this course because making lesson plans required me to utilize activities and instructional strategies that accommodate for different learning preferences and provide alternatives for ELL students and students with exceptionalities. My views will impact the way I teach because for every lesson I do I am going to prioritize student success and incorporate activities that tend to each learning preference. I also will provide alternatives or assistance for any ELL students or students with exceptionalities I could have. 5.)
Summarize the findings of Howard Gardner. How can teachers use this information?
Answer: Howard Gardner developed the Theory of Multiple Intelligences which refers to the ways people relate to ideas and absorb information. He developed seven intelligences verbal/linguistic, logical/mathematical, visual/spatial, musical/ rhythmic, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal, and intrapersonal. 6.)
Write about the importance of IDEA 2004 in the classroom. Also explain an IEP
and why this document is critical for educators to understand and use.
Answer: Individuals with Disabilities Education Act authorizes state and local aid for special education for children with disabilities. It also provides new ways that parents and schools can make changes to a student’s Individual Education Plan (IEP). An IEP is a program developed to
ensure that a child with an identified disability receives specialized instruction.
7.)
Who is Benjamin Bloom and why is he important in the field of education?
Answer: Benjamin Bloom created his famous Taxonomy of Educational Objectives with six levels of cognitive complexity that have been used over the past four decades in education to
make sure that instruction stimulates and develops students higher-order thinking skills.
8.)
Who is Ruby Payne and why is she important in the field of education?
Answer: Ruby Payne created A Framework for Understanding Poverty to explain how wealth effects worldview of students. This helps teachers better understand their students who are in poverty situations and how they learn. 9.)
Who is Jean Piaget and why is he important in the field of education?
Answer: Jean Piaget created the stages of cognitive theory which includes four stages of child development: sensorimotor stage, preoperational stage, concrete operations stage, and formal operations stage. This theory helps teachers understand where students should be at different ages and how they learn at these ages.
10.)
Summarize the “Learning Pyramid”; explain how teachers should use this research when planning instruction.
Answer: An illustration that identifies the seven methods of learning, and the effectiveness of each method in terms of knowledge retention. Teachers should use the learning pyramid to include multiples kinds of activities and instruction, so students are learning effectively. The
levels of the learning pyramid are teach others/ immediate use, practice by doing, discussion group, demonstration, audio-visual, reading, and lecture. Teaching strategies have changed so much in the past few years to include active, hands-on learning. 11.) Summarize the InTASC standards. Why are they important?
Answer: InTASC model core teaching standards is a guide of standards that models what a highly qualified teacher is required to teach. They help create a learning environment for students that fosters a proper education. Domain 1 focuses the most on the learner and learning so the teacher can understand differences and development of students, and an effective environment for students. Domain 2 focuses on content knowledge to make sure the teacher understands the content they are teaching and know how to apply it in various perspectives to engage learners. Domain 3 focuses on instructional practice, so the teacher is prepared for multiple stages and strategies of teaching students. It is essential that teachers assess students, plan for lessons, and use many ways of teaching a concept. Lastly, domain 4 focuses on professional responsibility of teachers so they teach in ethical practice and are active members of the school.
12.) What is edTPA? Provide an overview of what this is and why it will be important to you.
Answer: edTPA is the National Teacher Performance Assessment. Task 1 is planning for literacy, task 2 is instructing for literacy (video), task 3 is assessment, and task 4 is math. edTPA is important to me because I am working to become a certified teacher and working toward a teaching license as well. 13.) List the ways you have used technology in this course. (eg. PowerPoint presentation, Livetext portfolio, internet resources for lessons, etc.)
Answer: In this course I have used the Smart Board to show a Power Point presentation I created to teach my partner and solo lesson in the classroom. I consistently use LiveText to add to my portfolio, submit my lesson videos, and log my field experience. I use Canvas every day to complete tasks and check for due dates. I used TopHat to complete chapter quizzes for this course. I have used YouTube during my partner lesson to show a video during instruction.
14.) Reflect on your behavior management practices. What have you learned from your lessons as well as the lessons from your peers? What will you do differently when you “have your own classroom”?
Answer: I have learned from teaching my lessons that during instruction, engage the students
as much as possible with saying things together, calling on them, or playing a game. This will keep students engaged and not bored while teaching. When students are bored, they can become distractors to other students. I have learned that calling students by name keeps the lesson interactive and the students feel comfortable. I have also learned that praising student’s response and participation leads others to want to participate. In my own classroom, I will call students by name more and develop classroom management skills and routines to address behavioral issues with students.

15.) List three or more specific
accommodations you could make for students with exceptionalities:
Answer: 1) Students can work on assessments in a different setting (quiet room, few people, few distractions). 2) Students can sit where they learn best (near the teacher). 3) Students can
be given extra time to complete work. 4) Students are graded differently, or teachers have different expectations for their success versus other students. 5) Students can have frequent breaks to refresh their brain. 5) Teacher can read aloud to student 16.)
What is a rubric and how it helpful for teachers and students?
Answer: A rubric is a type of scoring guide that assesses specific components and expectations for the assignment. It outlines the requirements an assignment needs to meet to be successful. A rubric is helpful for teachers because it shows them how much students know and how well they can follow specific directions. It is helpful for students because it outlines everything students need to do to be successful. A rubric Is a how to be successful guide for students and how they are going to be graded. All students need to do is follow the rubric. 17.)
Describe what types of collaboration you have been involved in this semester with colleagues, families, and community.
Answer: This semester I have been involved in a second-grade classroom at an elementary school. When I am home, I will go in for the day to help in the classroom with the teacher and students. I help prepare materials, grade papers, work in groups of students, work individually with students, and read to the class. I attend Kappa Delta Pi meetings with my classmates and go to Jubilee Family Center in Lynchburg with my classmates. 18.)
Summarize what you have done to update your Livetext Portfolio
. Answer: I have added my VCLA score, student sample photos, field photos, lesson video, 2 lesson plans and self-reflections to my Livetext portfolio. I also log my school day field experience in Livetext. I have created my teacher profile page in my portfolio. 19.)
Describe your field experience at your school day practicum and your after school urban placement. What was similar? What was different? What you have learned from your field experience opportunities?
Answer: My field experience at my school day practicum is a lot of fun and very beneficial to see how to execute a lesson plan in a real class with all the elements and see how the teacher gains rapport and manages the classroom. My school day placement allows me to work with students and experience what it is like to do activities in a real class. I have learned classroom management strategies, how to modify activities for students with disabilities, and how to create meaningful lesson plans. My urban school placement is very different from my school day placement. I feel like I have not helped students improve academically. I usually just read with the kids for 10 minutes and then they go play, I don’t feel like I am learning anything new or taking anything away that I can use as a teacher.
20.)
Write a synopsis of your pedagogical growth throughout the progression of this course. Include your strengths and then provide strategies you have used or will implement for further development in any areas for which you feel you need improvement. Answer: Throughout this course I have learned a variety of activities I can use in a lesson plan. I have learned the importance of incorporating activities that allow students to get moving, collaborate, work independently, and use their hands. Students need a variety of ways to learn, not just keeping a pencil to paper. Throughout my three lessons, I have learned that differentiation to tend to various kinds of learners is key to success in students. I have also learned that calling students by name is very important to form relationships with students and keep them engaged in the lesson. Being an interactive teacher is also essential for students to feel comfortable and build rapport, this includes walking around the room, saying things together, using an enthusiastic tone of voice, and talking in a way students can understand. I think that my strengths are my ability to create a wide range of activities that keep students collaborating, engaged, and hands-on, while also still being able to assess them. I also think that
I do well creating a well-thought, differentiating lesson plan, and executing it in an enthusiastic way. I think I need to improve with talking in a professional manner and in a way that students can relate to. I have used strategies like, skip counting numbers out loud together, playing interactive partner games, sorting picture matches, cut and glue tasks, creating relatable and fun examples, coloring activities, and calling on students to participate throughout instruction. I will
continue to implement calling on students to participate during instruction to help me call on them properly.
21.)
The “bubble” framework represents the mission of the LU teacher licensure program. How has this course aided in helping to fulfill this mission?
Answer: This course has helped me fulfill the mission of the LU licensure program because I was required to utilize communication,
technology, and instructional skills through teaching my three
lesson plans and my practicum placements. I learned and now know how to create lesson plans, write objectives, the history of education,
how to differentiate according to diversity and learning preference, about various government education acts and programs, and roles of a teacher. As a reflective practitioner, I believe in commitment to my students and assume that students will be successful in my classroom and engage in a meaningful learning experience. I believe that collaboration is important for teachers and students and this course has taught me the value of collaborating with peers. This course has served as a foundation to my education career and taught me how to be an effective teacher.
22.)
What did you like best about this course? What could be improved?
Answer: My favorite part about this course was just creating the lesson plans and being left the freedom for what we wanted to do. I loved being able to come up with my objective and
create my own resources to use for teaching my lesson plan. I loved seeing my ideas come to
life and creating an interactive PowerPoint to guide the lesson. The only thing that I think can be improved about this course is finding a better urban placement or not being required as many hours in the urban field. Every time I went to Jubilee for my urban placement, I left feeling like I did not help much at all. However, going for the kids and building relationships
with them is good and they need it. 23.)
Choose an SOL and paste it in the table below: (be sure to include content and
