INFO 6077 – Winter 2024 Lab 3 Part 2: Graphics File Recovery and EXIF Data (15 marks) All screenshots MUST include a unique ‘ whoami & date /T & time /T ’ signature on each slide. Failure to include this WILL result in zero marks being awarded. 1. Download both Original.jpg AND the file assigned to you (see txt file in submission folder). Generate a hash on the following files and take a screen shot of each - Original.JPG - DSCN00A.JPG OR DSCN00B.JPG (1 Mark) 2. Are the two hash values the same? Why or why not? (1 Mark) 3. Using a hex editor (you may choose whichever one you prefer), correct the Hex Values at the following data points in the DSCN00A.jpg or DSCN00B.JPG files: Offset 0x00 05 to 0E A045786966000049492A Offset 0x10 16 to 17 6600 4. Show screenshot with the corrected header information (2 marks) 5a. Run the hash again on the file you were assigned. Did it change? (screenshot) (.5 mark) 5b. Does the hash value now match Original.jpg? (.5 mark) 6. Do the pictures Original.jpg and the file you were assigned look the same ? (1 mark) 7. How can two images that look identical have two different hash values? (2 marks) 8. Identify the location co-ordinates for your file (A or B) within the Metadata and identify the actual location on a map. 9. Using google street view and https://linangdata.com/exif-reader/ , (or you can use https://jimpl.com/ ) take a screenshot of the location. (2 marks) 10. Do the images match OR can you reasonably determine they are the same location? (1 mark) 11. Do the date and time seem accurate for the picture being displayed? (screenshot) (1 mark) 12. What is the camera make being used to take the image? (screenshot) (1 mark) 13. Identify the tag within the metadata located at offset 0x14C0 03 to 14 (screenshot) (1 mark) 14. Describe the kind of scenario or investigation where the skills you practiced above (and the evidence you uncovered) would be used. (1-2 paragraphs). (1 mark)

Part 2 – Downloading and Installing Magnet Axiom 1. First start by downloading the software at Magnet AXIOM 7.9.2 Download Link . This will download a .zip file (just over 4GB, so make sure you have space on your machine!) 2. Once the download is complete, unzip the file. The unzipped folder should look like this: 3. Launch the setup file to install Axiom on your PC. 4. Once Axiom Examine opens, navigate to HELP > LICENSING > CLS . 5. Select “Activate License” button and type this key: 114d-cf5d-5a6d-4b17-ab4c-777c-68a9- 2210 6. Select the license server and send me a screenshot with the whoami command . Done! Have fun with these!
