2 Introduction Teams that are successful are teams that have strong communication between the members of the team and strong bonds with each other. Each member of the team must be fully committed to the success of the team and be invested in the outcome of the decisions made by the team. To reach these decisions, there must be a mutual respect for all team members. Maintaining an open mindset and providing positive feedback will aid any team in reaching their desired results. If there is a strong connection on the team, even during challenges times, a team can come together to provide results for the greater good of the organization they are supporting. Analyzing Professional Communication in a Team Scenario The team at Imagine You has an eclectic staff of volunteers with varying levels of experience which is beneficial to ensuring their ideas can reach multiple audiences and resonate with the community. However, in the provided scenario, the Imagine You team faced multiple issues with leadership and communication in their brainstorming process. There was a breakdown in the process from the onset of the interaction. Imagine You’s mission is one that the team feels strongly about but due to the “disease of me,” the team was unable to reach a consensus on the best approach for its fundraising campaign (Gordon, G., 2018). Jim immediately commanded the room by standing in the beginning of the session, asserting himself as the leader. This was not received well by the other members of the team. His ideas for the fundraiser seemed finalized during his presentation without any prior input from the collective. The team members did not work collaboratively as they shared their additional ideas for the fundraiser. Each member made their minds up regarding what they felt was the best approach for Imagine You to take, discounting or outright shutting down the ideas of the other team members. The CEO and Laura did make attempts to fuse ideas together for a combined resolution but
3 ultimately the team was not successful in effectively working together to finalize their plans for the fundraiser. Professionalism The volunteers are Imagine You can greatly benefit from increased professionalism to enhance their decision-making processes. Increased professionalism would have aided the team in working together more collaboratively. Expectations should be set at the onset of the meeting regarding respectful and acceptable behaviors. Each team member should feel as though they are an equal contributor to the ideas that are carried out. In this scenario, body language played a significant role in how unreceptive the team was to Jim’s approach. His demand for urgency on making the decision was also not received well. He was asserting himself as the leader and used direct eye contact to influence the team to buy-in to his recommendation. It is recommended that all team members are seated in the brainstorming process as it was a shared event and not one that was being hosted by Jim. The team would also greatly benefit from understanding how to provide constructive feedback regarding ideas they feel will not be the most beneficial to the organization. This should be done gracefully, considering the impact of the feedback on the audience. Laura’s facial expression impacted the delivery of her message, and it was not received well. Nan’s non-verbal cues such as scowling and sighing demonstrated a disinterest in maintaining a professional environment. This behavior should be avoided during team meetings as it will negatively impact the audience and their perception of your ability to successfully receive information. Evaluation of Team Leadership As the leader of the organization, the CEO has legitimate power, the authority, to tell others what to do; employees are obligated to comply with legitimate orders (Bateman et al,

4 2020). Although the members are volunteers in the organization, they remain under the leadership of the CEO. Having a team member that serves as the leader is beneficial to the team to ensure fair practices, ensure and maintain order, and lead the team to success of the goals. It is important that the leader of the organization is a strong leader. The title alone does not imply a great leader. If appointed, or self-appointed, as the leader of any organization, it is critical to master the art of communication and commit yourself the greater good of the team. An appropriate approach to the scenario would be to share the expectations regarding behavior, provide the objective of the meeting, ask each team member to remain respectful, and hold team members accountable for unprofessional behavior. Productivity in Teams As stated by Thompson, strategies that can be exercised to increased productivity in teams is providing a sense of clarity of the project, creating pride and a sense of belonging (2015). For teams to successfully reach an outcome, they should have a clear plan of action on the goals of the project. This can be achieved with setting clear expectations at the onset. Creating milestone check-ins will also be beneficial to ensure the team stays on tasks. Team members should also take pride in their tasks. Team members should know their role matters to the team; this is how you get the best results and best product output for projects. Lastly, team members should feel a sense of belonging to the team. If they feel a strong connection to the team and its members, the team will have a higher likelihood of being a successful team. Conclusion Research has shown that the most successful teams excel at communication and have a strong foundation. Its members feel a sense of belonging and partner well with each other to reach results. The sense of pride that comes from working on teams is a big motivator to reach
5 successful outcomes. Teams are successful when all team members play their role and remain committed to the team’s success.
