5-1 Module Five Assignment: Impact of Cybercrime Ana Mejia Southern New Hampshire University CRJ 305:Technology in Criminal Justice Professor B. February 11, 2024
Target experienced a significant data breach in 2013, which was one of the largest on record. A data breach is an occurrence in which unauthorized individuals gain access to confidential or sensitive information, including personal data (such as Social Security numbers, bank account numbers, and healthcare data) or company data (such as customer records, intellectual property, and financial information) (What Is a Data Breach? | IBM, n.d.). Utilizing third-party vendor credentials, cyber assailants successfully acquired sensitive data from more than 60 million customers of Target. A staggering 41 million people fell prey to credit card theft, which resulted in the exposure of victims' personal details, including their complete names, addresses, and sensitive personal information. In general, the business was significantly affected by cyber crime.Following the cyber breach, those who were impacted were paid a sum of 18.5 million dollars as part of a settlement that spanned multiple states, which occurred in the year 2017. Furthermore, Target has made significant investments in enhancing their cyber security infrastructure. Nevertheless, despite the utmost endeavors, cybercrime of this nature can sway certain individuals to refrain from engaging in transactions with entities that have been targeted by such attacks. Being a devoted customer of Target, I appreciate the advantages that come with my business. Target has been allocating resources to the cyber security sector since 2013, instilling in me a sense of security against potential attackers. One of my colleagues was impacted by a cyber attack. My colleague was browsing Facebook Marketplace in search of a new rental residence. He contacted the individual who posted the rental and was instructed to make a payment in order to secure the reservation. My colleague fell prey to cybercrime and, currently facing a difficult situation, failed to recognize warning signs.
