2 Project Two: Presentation I. Provide your issue's research question. In a brief overview, how have the social sciences previously examined your selected issue? Include which social science disciplines have previously been used to research or explain your issue. How does toxic behavior within the online gaming community impact underaged gamers? Social scientists have conducted research on this particular issue by examining gaming communities through the lens of sociology because they were studying a group of people (gamers) and how they interact with each other ( Kowert, R, Killmer, E, 2022). II. A. Identify an audience that would be interested in your issue. For example, who would benefit most from hearing your message? Or who could best help in addressing the issue? I believe the audience that would benefit the most from my research would be gamers, social scientists studying the topic of toxic behavior within the community, as well as other students researching the topic. II. Explain how the issue impacts the audience. In other words, how is the issue relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about the response to your question or the outcome of your investigation? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation, and be sure to note the credible sources that support this connection. This research would help the gamers especially since they’re the ones who interact with the behavior mentioned in the research as well as the ones probably contributing to the toxic
3 behavior within the gaming community. This information could help them better understand maybe why they’re doing it, why its not okay, and why they shouldn’t behave so negatively. A good example would be III. Describe the evidence you have to support your conclusions about the impact of the issue on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. The article entitled "Don't You Know That You're Toxic: Normalization of Toxicity in Online Gaming" examines the phenomenon of toxic behavior in online multiplayer games and argues that it is indicative of underlying problems associated with negative conduct. These problems include antisocial behavior, which has a direct adverse impact on the well-being, enjoyment, and retention of players. Additionally, the article investigates the perceptions of toxicity within the online gaming community and how these perceptions can be used to predict player characteristics. The resource titled "STFU NOOB!: predicting crowdsourced decisions on toxic behavior in online games" primarily centers its attention on the identification and assessment of the extent of toxicity within the online gaming community, as well as its consequential social implications for both players and gameplay. The authors undertake the collection of data in order to develop models capable of discerning the prevalence of toxic behavior, encompassing its diverse sub-categories, such as deliberate game sabotage to ensure team defeat or engaging in inappropriate communication via text chat. The article titled "Why Are You Playing Games? You Are a Girl!: Exploring Gender Biases in Esports" focuses on investigating the influence of social roles on gender biases that exist in the esports community. The article delves into the personal impact of toxic behavior on individuals within the

4 community. These resources are significant in addressing the social concerns related to toxic behavior in the online gaming community as they provide a range of perspectives on the issue and are specifically targeted towards the topic of toxic behavior within the community. They are all relatable and pertain to the issues that myself, an online gamer and others within the community because they all explain the behavior as well as list examples and information that nearly all of us have faced within the gaming community. IV. Explain why this issue is important to you personally. In other words, why did you select this issue to investigate? The social interactions in relation to online multiplayer videogames affects me personally because I am part of the gaming community that plays a lot of these type of video games. Being gay, I sometimes experience scrutiny, harassment, and bullying because of the way I talk. I believe I can relate to women on this issue because I am also part of a minority group that gets targeted quite often in cyberbullying attacks while gaming. There are positive moments of course but, the bad sometimes can outweigh the good. Its gotten so bad that games like, Overwatch 2 have come out with a verification system to make it harder for people who have been banned to return to the game. This system targets people who use abusive and foul language both in the text and voice chat. V. Illustrate how your investigation of the issue impacted the way you thought about the issue. In other words, how did thinking like a scientist to research and develop a question affect what you thought about the issue you selected? How did social scientific thinking
5 change the lens through which you viewed the issue? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. Viewing the social issues that reside within the online multiplayer gaming community through the lenses of a social scientist has impacted my knowledge and how I see the issues. From the perspective of a social scientist, the issue can be explained and understood in a way that is more logical and comprehensive. Its essentially like using a guide that provides you with a checklist of ways to properly research and review social issues without making the mistake of being biased or subjective. VI. Explain why using evidence-supported research can give you both a personal and professional advantage. In other words, what is the value of supporting your work with evidence? Using evidence-supported research can give you a personal and professional advantage because when your sources are credible, scholarly, and can pass the ‘craapo’ test, you have a higher chance of keeping your research accurate. Its important to have accurate sources and research information so you fully understand and know how to explain the topic you are researching. From a professional perspective, it makes your work credible and able to be used in another person’s research.
