Roy S. Carey Jr. CIS 101 1.2 Discussion: The History of Women in Technology 12/13/2023 1. Name one pioneering woman in STEM (not already listed) and discuss her contributions. 2. Real-life Scenario: You are working at a help desk at an organization. A young lady calls because she was just disconnected from the Internet. You will provide a simple solution. While on the phone, she expresses that she has always wanted to enter into a STEM-related field but feels that women really struggle and are underrepresented. Using your soft skills, how do you resolve the problem and encourage her to enter into the STEM-related field of her dreams? Part 1 Bessie Blount From New Jersey contributed a device to help handicapped soldiers return from World War 2. This device allowed soldiers to feed themselves if they lost limbs. By biting down it would administer the wounded food. Blount also patented a portable receptacle support. Part 2 If I had to instruct someone how to get their internet back online. The first thing I would tell them would be to turn the device off and restart the internet device. I would tell her not to get discouraged cause women pioneered the movement of STEM work. They were some of our biggest contributors who didn’t get enough credit. I would tell her never to give up on her dreams no matter what happens. Long as you are breathing you have an opportunity to succeed. I would let her know to check her modem at this point and see if it is back online. Then if it doesn’t work now I would tell her to troubleshoot the signal and this should tell her the root of her problem. I would give her all the support on both situations to make her more comfortable with taking chances.
