UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY TO BUILD A SAFER FUTURE 1 Utilizing Technology to Build a Safer Future: Why Technology is Good for Us. Ali Shirazee #501236960 Toronto Metropolitan University CRM101 - Understanding Crime in Canada Professor Thomas 8 November, 2023 In the evolution of human society, technology is expected to be a useful tool for invention, information, and possibly the most impactful in assuring safety. It’s not just about gadgets and gizmos; it's about being able to surround ourselves with security, and being comfortable in society. In January, Joel Brown published an article; “From Google Searches to Cell Phone Data to Ring Cameras, Technology Keeps Tripping up Criminals” (Brown, 2023). Joel Brown's article highlights how technology is becoming an ally in the fight against crime, leading us toward a future where safety is not only a possibility but a fundamental fact.
UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY TO BUILD A SAFER FUTURE 2 "The proliferation of personal and wearable technology, along with more security cameras, has made it increasingly difficult for criminals to get away with their crimes, trapping them in a web of metadata that is sometimes impossible to elude" (Brown, 2023). Joel Brown summarizes the essence of technology's impact on crime. Demonstrating how technology is revolutionizing surveillance by building a system that increases the stakes for offenders. Furthermore, the Department of Public Safety in Canada states; “Some studies suggest that CCTV is most effective in reducing property crime. Some reductions in the commission of certain types of property crime do appear to be correlated with CCTV coverage. Ditton (1996) too, saw reductions in vehicle crime” (Department of Public Safety in Canada, n.d). It's true that skeptics argue that the widespread usage of surveillance technologies gives rise to worries about invasions of privacy and possible misuse of personal data. Critics frequently argue that the widespread use of portable and personal technology, along with the vast network of security cameras, may result in unjustified surveillance and violate people's rights in the name of preventing crime. While concerns about privacy are serious, we must acknowledge that technology and privacy protections can coexist. In order to prevent potential abuses, rules and regulations including data privacy laws and particular limits on the use of surveillance footage are crucial. Moreover, the advantages of increased surveillance must not be eclipsed by fixable concerns. The Department of Public Safety in Canada highlights benefits of technology surveillance by
UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY TO BUILD A SAFER FUTURE 3 acknowledging the usefulness of CCTV in decreasing crime. Society can use the potential of technology to create a safer environment without compromising fundamental individual rights by managing midpoint between privacy and security. Technology also broadened the ability to solve crimes, empowering ordinary individuals, or even minor details on social media to benefit in preserving public safety. Reporter Katie DeRosa states that the tech innovation, Amber Alert, has been beneficial in the investigation of crimes. “Since Amber Alerts were implemented in 2004, 22 have been issued involving 27 children. All of the children were safely located” (DeRosa, 2023). As well as a report by the CBC in which the police in Regina highlight the evidence caught through social media; "It may be something as simple as an item in the background that gives us enough evidence to corroborate the address and the location that they do live at.” Highlighting the fact that social media can be a key method to assist officers in looking for evidence, even if it’s just the background of a photo” ("Social Media Can Help or Hinder Police," 2012). Critics suggest that law enforcement may cross lines when relying too much on social media or insufficient proof, leading to errored investigation. However, taking a balanced approach is crucial when using social media for crime-solving. Although it is true that social media details can be subjective, the CBC article emphasizes how important data can be in supporting other pieces of evidence and helping law enforcement get warrants. The use of such material in a responsible and ethical manner is crucial, with law enforcement organizations using due diligence to verify findings and prevent unwarranted allegations.

UTILIZING TECHNOLOGY TO BUILD A SAFER FUTURE 4 Additionally, Technological developments have made data analysis and crime solving easier. Consider DNA tech, could anyone deny that it has significantly benefited us? In an article by the Department of Justice of Canada it states; “DNA has been instrumental in assisting in the search for truth by exonerating the innocent. In Canada, the wrongful conviction cases of David Milgaard and Guy Paul Morin provide powerful examples of how DNA evidence can be used to exonerate innocent people. (Justice Canada, n.d). Tech advancements have significantly saved lives from being taken without right, families from suffering, and communities from unsolved crime. Critics claim that gathering and continually storing DNA information for criminal purposes may lead to misuse, illegal entry, cyberattacks, or prejudice. However, The storing/usage of DNA data is governed by strict privacy laws and regulations. Access to this material is strictly regulated, only law enforcement officers and forensic specialists can access, but follow strict guidelines. In summary, technology shows reliability in our shared struggle for security. Our cultural landscape has changed as a result of technology's incorporation into crime prevention, from community-based apps to DNA Tech or CCTV cameras. It's clear that technology is pointing the way towards a future in which safety is a reality rather than only a struggle, as we develop the broad range of the digital era.
