Harris2 Topic description Introduction The topic I would be discussing is about women in law enforcement. This topic encompasses a multifaceted exploration of the presence, experiences, and challenges faced by women pursuing careers in policing. Historically, women have been underrepresented in law enforcement, particularly in leadership roles, but efforts have been made to increase their participation through recruitment initiatives and diversity policies. Currently, women make up only 13% of the law enforcement workforce (Crowley, 2019). This topic delves into the recruitment and training of female officers, addressing the impact of gender stereotypes and the unique challenges they encounter, such as discrimination and work-life balance. It also highlights the positive influence of women in law enforcement on community policing and the necessity of promoting diversity and inclusion within agencies. Population One significant population within my topic is women of color. Women of color often face distinct challenges due to their intersecting identities, such as racial and gender discrimination. They may encounter biases and stereotypes based on both their gender and ethnicity, which can impact their recruitment, training experiences, and career advancement opportunities. Additionally, the cultural practices and expectations in their communities may have an impact on whether they decide to work in law enforcement or how they experience the job. Despite these challenges, women of color contribute unique perspectives to the field of law enforcement and assist in bridging gaps between the police and marginalized communities (Fritsvold, 2021). Their involvement is essential for fostering a diverse and inclusive environment inside law enforcement agencies.

Women of color in law enforcement encounter the intersectionality of gender and racial discrimination, which adds an extra layer of complexity to their professional journey. Their presence is indispensable for creating a more diverse and inclusive environment within law enforcement agencies, which in turn can lead to improved policing practices and more equitable outcomes for all members of society. The experiences of women of color in law enforcement highlight the resilience and determination required to navigate a field that historically lacks diversity, emphasizing the importance of addressing issues related to gender and racial equity within the profession. Successful conversational and collaborative approaches have included highlighting instances where female officers have excelled in community policing, conflict resolution, and building trust with marginalized communities. A few examples are that female officers are less likely to use excessive force, they are skilled at addressing violence against women and sex crimes, and have superior problem-solving skills (Fritsvold, 2021). These successes are often showcased through media campaigns, documentaries, and social media platforms, shining a spotlight on the positive impacts of gender diversity in law enforcement. By emphasizing these achievements, we can create a ripple effect, as it fosters a broader understanding of the tangible benefits of having more women in the profession. This, in turn, encourages not only more women to consider careers in law enforcement but also prompts agencies to actively recruit, retain, and promote women within their ranks. Benefit from change One specific element within my topic that could benefit from change is the underrepresentation of women in leadership roles within police departments. “The under- representation of women in policing is not just unfair – it is perpetuating a style of policing which is outdated, ineffective, and enormously costly to communities” (FMF Blog, 1998). In fact, it has been proven that women have been disproportionately underrepresented in higher-

Many women do not even try to reach these positions because of fear of oppression from male coworkers (Crooke, 2013). To improve this aspect, agencies should implement proactive policies and initiatives aimed at promoting and supporting women's career advancement. This could include mentorship programs, leadership training tailored to the unique challenges faced by women in law enforcement, and creating a more inclusive workplace culture. Ultimately, by addressing this issue, we can encourage a transformative shift toward greater gender equity and diversity in law enforcement leadership, which can lead to more effective and responsive policing practices. Potential obstacle One potential obstacle that could interfere with the population's engagement with women in law enforcement is resistance to change within traditional law enforcement culture. The law enforcement profession has historically been male-dominated, and some members of the force may be resistant to embracing gender diversity and inclusivity due to long-held traditions and beliefs about the roles of men and women. This resistance can manifest as subtle discrimination, lack of support for women officers, or slow implementation of policies aimed at promoting gender equality. Overcoming this obstacle requires a cultural shift within law enforcement agencies, which can be challenging to achieve given the deeply ingrained norms and values. The greater the number of allies supporting an idea for change, the higher the likelihood of successful implementation (Willis, 2021).
